In the 1980s, if you wanted your IBM PC to be faster for spreadsheets or CAD, you could buy the Intel 8087 floating-point chip. Internally, the chip runs special code called microcode. We opened the chip, extracted the microcode, and are figuring out how it works. 1/n

The 8087 chip is a black rectangle with 40 metal pins along its long sides. This package is known as a DIP (dual inline package). Unlike modern chips, this chip is a ceramic package. Text on the chip includes "D8087-1" "Intel copyright 1980 1984"/

Syntaur is selling newly manufactured 303 cases. The details aren't quite right (the Roland logo is off, in particular) but it's close and I might swap it over while I get the original refurbished (I installed the Kenton socket kit aged 15, drilling the holes before I knew what a center punch was).

I recently saw an amazing Navajo rug at the National Gallery of Art. It looks abstract at first, but it is a detailed representation of the Intel Pentium processor. Called "Replica of a Chip", it was created in 1994 by Marilou Schultz, a Navajo/Diné weaver and math teacher. 1/n

A Navajo rug with a complex pattern with muted reds, pinks and blues. The pattern consists of various vertical and horizontal rectangles with stripes. Around the border are small alternating black and colored rectangles. The weaving is mounted in a wooden frame and hanging on the museum wall.

An item from a specific moment: When IN RAINBOWS first appeared as a pay-what-you-want download in 2007, Radiohead did not include a cover. In the brief window that followed, fans created their own cover art. I do not know who made this, but to my mind, it is the proper album cover, now and always.
