Polls before the primary had El-Sayed up by huge margins against Stevens and losing to Rogers in the general election. First post-election polls had forecasters turn Michigan from lean democrat to toss-up. This poll has El-Sayed significantly ahead. Polls are a mess. thehill.com/homenews/cam...

The same centrists complaining that DSA are not really Dems and should start their own party while complain if DSA members actually chose to run as third party candidates accusing them of splitting the vote and their voters of throwing away their vote.

The flip side of this is that those who most often complain about their language being policed are the ones least likely to have their language actually policed beyond random people on the internet with no actual power to actually police them.

Victor Ray@victorerikray.bsky.social · 6d ago

It is telling that folks claiming that "policing language" is a horrible affront (and not something we do every single day in a functioning society) rarely say the words being policed.

One preliminary finding of research I am undertaking related to the impact of federal policy shifts on local community orgs is that SNAP cuts have shifted their focus to feeding their constituents in ways that distract from their actual missions. Cuts to SNAP have so many ripple effects.

Miranda Yaver@mirandayaver.bsky.social · 2w ago

SNAP has an outstanding ROI: every dollar we invest in SNAP generates $1.54 in economic activity. With SNAP cuts, people can’t continue to support these local grocers, so local businesses suffer. Everyone loses.

Not going to pretend that I know who the best candidate for Wisconsin governor is but it does seem pretty rich that a tweet from seven years ago is apparently a big political scandal given the shit we see posted every single day by everyone in power

Despite what the media would like to convince us, people do not underperform polls. Polls underperform results and have done it so many times (especially since 2016) that there really is no reason to continue to consult them in determining electability.

I love how whenever polling is wrong (which is literally all the time) the discourse becomes “why did x candidate underperform?” as opposed to “why do we keep spending millions of dollars on polls that are literally no better than guessing?”

An Israeli Jewish descendant of Holocaust survivors becoming a target shows that efforts to silence political speech on campus was never about anti-Semitism or even about anti-Israeli sentiment. It is about silencing disagreement with the current Israeli government. apple.news/ASNi1vj-aSGW...

Interesting how this coverage is unequivocally calling Pulido’s tweet racist and homophobic—a framing he rejects. While one might disagree with his defense it is interesting to contrast this with how journalists describe the racist shit Trump says as “racially charged.” apple.news/ACqLU9w6ESdG...

We really have no idea whether El-Sayed is more or less electable than Stevens. What we do know is that the Dem establishment was just taught that they ignore their left wing at their own peril, which is something the GOP learned long ago about their right wing. That is a victory in and of itself.

It looks like an entire industry has emerged to make Chinese international students fear the communities they will be studying in. And the saddest part is under this current presidential administration there is genuinely more to fear about studying in the US. www.scmp.com/news/china/p...

Another great episode! The genealogical approach to raciolinguistics is fantastic - as Prof Flores explains, sometimes we can more easily spot racist ideologies in the past, than in the present. Tracing their evolution over timeand context helps to call out and make sense of current ones too.

I see a lot of people on here calling this gender affirming care. It is literally the opposite though. Gender affirming care is a decision made by an individual and their health care provider. This is the government forcing people to take hormones in service of a macho eugenic fantasy.

MAGA: Trans people should be denied gender affirming care because biological sex is natural and binary Also MAGA: Men are not real men unless they are forced to undergo medically coercive hormonal therapy.

Does institutional bilingual education just reinforce racial hierarchies? Find out from @brynnquick.bsky.social’s conversation with Nelson Flores on this very interesting @languageonthemove.bsky.social podcast. ⬇️

Gay is an identity. So the question should not be whether Graham was a closeted gay man but rather whether he was a who had sex with men while doing everything in his power to oppress those of us who identify as gay. If he did he was not gay but simply a hypocrite.

The only way I can go for such an approach is if it is not a wishy washy pivot to the center on social issues but rather an unapologetic embrace of multiculturalism that works to convince “people who haven’t always voted our way” that the real issue that oppresses all of is is neoliberalism.

Buttigieg: We gotta get out there and build that new governing vision, not by preaching to the choir, not by only talking to everyone who already agrees with us, but by finding the people who haven’t always voted our way and changing how they see us by showing that we see them.

One American antisemitic myth of Jews is that we are all foreigners. Here, a Jewish outlet is promoting that myth to score cheap political points in support of its own Islamophobic agenda. It’s a good example of how Jewish-American Islamophobia is 1) wrong on its own and 2) bad for Jews

Proto-Indo-European is a language ideology that remapped Christian dogma related to the Tower of Babel onto 19th century race science related to a mythical Aryan superior race and now some historical linguists continue to refer to it as simply existing in ways that ironically obscure this history.
