Pseudonym of a boring policy wonk by day

Center-right, former lifelong Republican, NeverTrump, policy and stat geek with too much education and too much experience.

A gracious concession: “I want to congratulate Abdul El-Sayed on winning the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate. He is a doctor, a community health official, a Rhodes Scholar, and a dedicated Michigander. I am proud to offer my support as he takes on Mike Rogers in the general election…

To reaffirm my principles: While I am now more pessimistic about Dems winning back the Senate, it is important it happen to limit MAGA damage to America. So if I were in Michigan, I would reluctantly vote for AES. Since I am not, I am sending an extra minor contribution to Mary Peltola in Alaska.

Michigan's Democratic Attorney General, Dana Nessel, said that she will not attend the Michigan Democratic Convention because she would not feel safe. Republicans who defy Trump often fear for their personal safety. The far left is doing the same to Dems. The hatemongering is destroying America.

Democratic candidates are taking pledges and succumbing to the left’s purity test that they take no PAC or corporate money. Meanwhile the DSA left is raking in piles from dark money groups and from multiple PACs.

Gretchen Whitmer endorsed Haley Stevens in the Michigan Senate primary. How much weight does an endorsement hold, especially coming from someone who won the state twice? @citizencohn.bsky.social on what Whitmer's endorsement means in the upcoming Democratic primary.

Ossoff: "So, just to review, you will not answer whether your statement made on the 14th day of the war that Iran's military had been 'destroyed' and made combat ineffective was truthful statement...as you sit here and ask for tens of billions more for the conflict?" Hegseth is scared to DEATH.

I have seen dozens of "progressive" attacks like this or worse on a winning moderate Democrat. Tell me: What part of the US Constitution gives a state governor the authority to replace a sitting US Senator???

The longer Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear fails to find out what’s happening or what happened with Mitch McConnell—and act—the more Beshear looks utterly incompetent and weak.

I really wish that a large fraction of the “ICE is still in X place” attention were being paid to stuff like this. It’s not even about the people getting apprehended today. It’s about the people who DISENROLLED FROM THEIR LIVES out of fear and are now trying to pick back up.

The world may have moved on from Minneapolis but its immigrant community continues to struggle. We spoke to single mothers who hid from ICE for months, ran through their savings, and now can’t pay to renew their DACA applications. At least dozens are in this situation. 19thnews.org/2026/07/ice-...

I can see there are people on here who think that academia must be exclusively controlled by people exactly like themselves. If you think that, it's a good idea to block me, because that is a poisonous view that will end up destroying our universities. And I will not sit by and watch that happen.

Intl. students, including PhDs, must finish degrees in 4 years. The only assurance from DHS in new rule is the right to file an extension. NFAP’s Mark Regets asks, “How is that a genuine assurance? Why take a chance on a US education?” @mclem.org @adamposen.bsky.social www.forbes.com/sites/stuart...

We drive on the parkway and park on the driveway. We call the system that is massively social (voluntary interactions between businesses, workers, investors, and consumers) "capitalism" despite capital being the least compensated part. We call the centralized and LEAST social system "socialism".
