The snobbishness about this comes in part from the fact you can no longer pay all your bills doing a minimum wage job. If you work 35hrs a week you should be able to pay rent, pay utilities, buy food & have a little left over for a few beers on a Friday. This never used to be a controversial view.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with working a minimum wage retail job no matter your age. A job is a job. And this performative, ignorant gatekeeping by those saying it's not a "proper job" can get in the bin. Work is work.

It's not about The Dignity Of Work. Unless you're very lucky, work is usually at best boring & at worst demeaning, painful & humiliating. If you've set up a system that says "You'd better work all day or you'll suffer destitution" & full-time workers are still destitute, the system is the problem.

Reading the things in this thread from the article… and being as I’m about to start the adoption process… it baffles me how anyone would go through all the trouble of having a child only to not fucking parent at all?? Like… I WANT to talk to my kid! I want to help them through life! Why don’t they?

A consistent pitch by the makers of ai wearables is that they solve the problem of getting to know your child. www.businessinsider.com/parents-brea...

Molly, who runs a startup to help parents book activities for kids, is willing to use AI for logistics, like meal planning or sorting through her email to surface the most important messages from their daughter's school. Sean, who works in tech sales, wants to go further. He has his eyes on Omi necklace, an AI wearable that listens in on your day and includes a feature called Parent Whisperer. It records and analyzes interactions between parent and child, logging things like school assignments and supplies to order. The device also picks up on tone, alerting parents when their kid may be unhappy — registering everything from "from toddler tantrums to teenage mood swings," per its ad copy — and offering "expert-backed guidance" on how to respond.

do we really need to have fart jokes in movies? i feel like they seldom advance the plot and they also make me uncomfortable. like it makes me wonder if it was really stinky on set and the actors had a bad time because of the smell
