was just reading an interview with a writer who said, in essence, that they have a 2nd book idea but don't know if they'll write it bc they don't know if they'll make any money on it. and this made me blisteringly sad. everyone needs to eat & pay rent but I want to read the books ppl WANT to write!

This. I started EMPRESS OF STORMS on a dare, but my SF/fantasy background took over and what was supposed to be a sexy royal May/December romance is now a projected 8-book series (4 are published, I’m working on Book 5). And trying to make both romance and fantasy readers happy is HARD, y’all.

Honestly what I'm finding with romantasy is the marketing is trying to appeal to traditional fantasy readers (who will read 10 pages of worldbuilding about tea) and romance readers (who want the character relationship in focus). It's an almost impossible line to walk.

Like, it's just really easy to see that I am not going to be able to keep up with the LITERAL REST OF THE WORLD in output. Even without AI. The way people like me win is by writing memorable books that relate to the human experience.

And the thing that will have the most value for me is that people will see my name and know that a human being worked on this book and did her best to make it the best, and most meaningful, book she could.
