Hundreds of studies on sea level rise and coastal hazards have underestimated the height of the oceans by ~ 20 to 30 cm on average. In some places, they were > 1 m off. Sea level rise is decades ahead of where we thought it was. me for @sciencenews.bsky.social www.sciencenews.org/article/stud...

Hundreds of studies have missed how much the oceans are rising

A widely used method to calculate sea level rise may have missed up to a century of change, so the risks could hit home for millions sooner than thought.

I kept reading that the long-term health effects of tear gas and pepper spray were poorly understood. But in my reporting, I learned evidence is mounting these chemicals can continue affecting us long after the tears stop. me for @sciencenews.bsky.social www.sciencenews.org/article/tear...

Tear gas and pepper spray can have lasting health effects

The chemicals are widely used for crowd control, but their long-term health risks are poorly understood.

Our CEO @mayaajmera.bsky.social made over $600K in 2023. And yet here we are, on #strike for fair compensation so we can pay our bills. What gives, @society4science.bsky.social?

Here are some numbers: The @society4science.bsky.social CEO @mayaajmera.bsky.social received a $77K raise in 2022, and then a $63K raise in 2023. That first number is more than some employees’ entire salaries! Our employees deserve a transparent and equitable pay structure.

I’m striking because I want fair and equitable pay for myself and my colleagues. I want the @society4science.bsky.social to realize that I am a professional and don’t need to be in their building to do my job well. Respect and fairness is what I am striking for!

Solidarity is in our DNA! We're asking @society4science.bsky.social for a fair contract with equitable pay and work flexibility.

A Science News worker holds two signs, one in her right hand and another is on a lanyard around her neck. The one in her hand has a jar drawn on it and reads "preserve our remote work culture." The one around her neck reads "solidarity is in our DNA" and has a DNA helix drawn at the bottom.

We have fully remote workers who are essential to our publications. They get freedom to work wherever they can do their best work. Those of us in the DMV have to go sit in an office building 2 days a week where it is very difficult to work. Why?

This week we're talking pay. For years our employees have received annual raises that lag behind the rising cost-of-living. Meanwhile, our CEO @mayaajmera.bsky.social has been getting raises as large as some employees’ entire salaries! We deserve fair pay, @society4science.bsky.social. #worthmore ✊

This may be hour 3 of @sn-media-guild.bsky.social's picket, but it's also been more than 13,400 hours of negotiations. @society4science.bsky.social has spent that time opposing our demands for a fair and transparent pay structure and flexible work arrangements. But we're not giving up anytime soon✊

We're entering hour three of our 12-hour picket on day 560 of negotiations with @society4science.bsky.social. This contract is way overdue!
