I think my 3 lovely visual experiences watching The Odyssey (Circe, the Underworld, Calypso’s island) vs. the classicists’ collective hatred of it come down to this: they went in expecting fidelity to the book, while I went in already happy that someone in Hollywood knows how to spell “Odyssey.”
Found this text by Camille Goemans from 1924 about Proust. It basically says his work is reduced o to psychology or memory theory, while the novel is neither offering explanations memory, nor asking us simply to relive the past. It is inventing a new mode of thought and writing.

It's Proust's bday. In december I submitted my thesis on memory and got stuck in Paris for Xmas. I found a ridiculously pink hotel and there he was. In june I won the GEM award in Bochum and the morning I left there he was. Since then I am on my way to finish La recherche so he stops haunting ❤️

Really wanted to publicly congratulate my friend Emil Rosina, who defended his PhD today at Ruhr Universität Bochum. His work explores memory features through verbal reports (emiling.info). Besides doing great work, as a trans man and neurodivergent scholar, his presence in academia is very needed.
