As opposition to data centers grows across the United States, the tech industry is "pulling from tried-and-tested playbooks" to bypass it, write Dean Jackson and Samantha Totoni—from nonprofit front groups to super PACs to tightly managed public forums.

Big Tech’s PR Playbook for Overcoming Data Center Opponents

Insultingly WE pay for TEP propaganda ads, actors & ‘updates.’ Why? They want MORE rate increases from us for dirty power for #projectblue -for billions in profit 😡 As Tucson’s skyline gets ugly & TEP refuses to upgrade OUR infrastructure, will they also coerce our rates to climb 267%, like in VA?

Our private electric utility company, TEP, poached a local TV news reporter and now he shows up at public meetings to do PR for them.

"As Japanese financial newspaper Nikkei Asia found in a recent investigation, just five US tech giants — Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, and Oracle — are hiding an estimated $1.65 trillion in debt that doesn’t appear on balance sheets. futurism.com/artificial-i...

AI Companies Are Trying to Hide a Staggering Amount of Debt

Here in southern Arizona alone we're looking at at ~3GW of new energy demand from planned data centers, more than the entire city of Tucson consumes. Our utility companies' energy mix is mostly fracked gas, and you're sadly mistaken if you think they're going to meet the new demand with renewables.

We could also just not power them at all. LLMs have no real social benefits, they exist solely for fraud, misinformation, and spam. It's a waste of energy and money and only serves to further enrich the worst people, so why even entertain the notion they're worth supporting?

“…if we win this site fight, is this data center likely to be relocated outside the US? This internationalist frame should be part of political education and public facing commentary so that anyone in the US opposing a site in their locality will stay activated to oppose it in other places as well.”

No Data Centers in Anyone's Backyard

Stopping US data centers means little for the planet if they simply shift to Global Majority countries, write Vignesh Ramachandran and Inayat Sabhikhi.

i’m old enough to remember when folks in Memphis managed to take their own arial photos of Colossus to show that xAI had 35 methane gas turbines operating on-site, not just the 15 that were permitted. now court documents put that figure at FIFTY SEVEN. www.wired.com/story/doj-la...
