i think one of the small, concrete things someone could do to help fight the injustices of immigrant detention is to edit and update ICE facilities' wikipedia pages. many are outdated, thin at best, and/or have incorrect information

Since 2025, ICE has been refilling America's empty private prisons. At least 11 shuttered or idle private facilities are now active ICE detention centers holding ~9,600 people — with 3 more opening soon. A thread about the buildings, the land under them, and who profits. 🧵

I've started indexing every one of these "zombie prisons" now holding ICE detainees — timelines, ownership, land history, sources — here: www.hotelflorida.org/the-former-p... It's a work in progress and corrections and additions are welcomed

The Former Prisons Being Refilled By ICE

This page indexes every dedicated ICE facility I track that occupies a former prison: what the building used to be, who owns the ground under it, when it flipped, and where to read more.

One of the professors in this lawsuit, Leonard Bright, had a class cancelled three days after the semester began because he couldn't give Texas A&M a clear answer about how much gender and sexuality would come up in class discussions. It was a graduate seminar in ethics.

New from Andrew Joseph Pegoda: In an attempt to overcomply with Texas law, the University of Houston will eliminate over 100 women's studies, gender and sexuality courses from the core curriculum. It won't be enough to appease extremist Republicans.

University of Houston Nixed Its Gender and Sexuality Classes. That Won’t Stop Texas’ Crusade Against Higher Ed

College administrators wrongly hope that anticipatory obedience will satisfy a GOP-run Texas Legislature that is increasingly hostile toward education.

Was trying to do an annual update, but it has come to my realization that Trump wiped everything between FY2024 and FY2026 from the USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub. @thexylom.com now has one of the last independent copies of data re: H-1B skilled workers in America's top higher education institutions.

The Most Detailed Maps of H-1B Visa Holders Joining America's Top Research Institutions

A new analysis by The Xylom shows for the first time just how much America’s top research institutions have grown to depend on the specialized knowledge of H-1B skilled workers — and how this delicate...

EXCLUSIVE: A new analysis by The Xylom's @alexip718.com shows for the first time just how much America’s top research institutions have grown to depend on H-1B skilled workers — and how this delicate balance might be disrupted by U.S. President Donald Trump’s crackdown on legal immigration.

this afternoon i filed a story on a geo group-run ICE detention complex in southeast georgia. aside from the reporting, which took me in some wild directions, my biggest takeaway is that closing a jail or prison is not enough. the buildings themselves have to be repurposed so they cannot be refilled

🚨 NEW: $36 million payment from ICE to GEO Group, for-profit prison company, on July 24 for detention services at Mesa Verde and Golden State ICE detention facility in California. ICE is a for-profit scheme paid for by taxpayers, using immigrants as commodities. www.quiverquant.com/news/Governm...

🧵 i've spent the last few days giving myself a crash course in how to find the stories of immigrants currently in detention in the united states. i want to share one story i found, so you can understand how fundamentally broken our immigration system is. everything here has come from public data.

The diarrhea lettuce company, Taylor Farms, uses slave labor contracted from the Arizona Dept. of Corrections. The backbreaking labor is often performed by imprisoned Mexican nationals who would be otherwise ineligble to work in the US. They are paid $1.50 an hour.

The Diarrhea Lettuce Company Has Been Linked to Forced Labor

The lettuce-producing Taylor Farms was linked to the widespread use of prison labor before its involvement in a cyclospora outbreak.
