For the past five months the only refugees the USA has accepted are white South Africans fleeing equality & safety meanwhile they are disappearing or strapping ankle monitors on any Haitian they can get ahold of. It needs to be understood how thoroughly connected these two things are.

This can’t be described as just webdev A/B testing anymore, this is unregulated human subjects research being conducted without standard oversight, participant protections, or informed consent. A future sane Congress and HHS need to develop a solution for this.

26-employee Texas law firm gets $150M to represent 24,000 children in immigration court

This is the **Idaho** guard randomly arresting dissenters in Washington DC. It’s dishonest for media to just keep calling it a “deployment” at this point. You can’t have-wave away the social dynamics and historical implications of Idaho violently occupying DC.

"Get away from me right now," King, a retired U.S. Army captain who served in Iraq and earned both a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star, can be heard telling the three male guard members in the video as they approach her on the bench. "You have absolutely no authority to detain me."

Still amazing that the official government policy is universities can't do DEI except for hiring professors whose politics better align with the regime in power.

Time to add another formerly respected institution to the garbage pile, this time @aau.edu, which just worked with the Trump admin to endorse resegregation in high education, embedding MAGA fraudsters as faculty, and banning student expression. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Education Secretary Linda McMahon is sending a letter Monday to the leaders of US universities asking them to commit to a slate of campus reforms by the end of 2026 in the Trump administration’s latest effort to overhaul higher education.

The letter, which was reviewed by Bloomberg News, asks schools to publicly pledge to make sweeping changes that include reexamining admissions practices, hiring more conservative faculty, cracking down on student protests, combating grade inflation, reducing foreign donations and lowering tuition.

This raises the stakes of the midterms substantially for public research. Based on this article, I think we can assume they’ll allow the rule to go forward if they retain a Congressional majority.

I predict this will be an issue in San Diego over the next few years. A politician selling a bus-based system as a way to quickly implement usable transit but not also talking about massive expansion of bus priority along major corridors is lying to sabotage future transit efforts. (1/2)

august 🍂@auguststreet.ca · 3d ago

another factor: these network redesigns cut a lot of low-use routes that run on low-traffic streets, that tend to have favourable reliability stats. throwing more buses on high ridership corridors is good but this is also where traffic congestion is high. bus lanes/transit priority is critical here

But he also wondered if this was a specific problem to Better Bus, so he looked at other cities that reconfigured their bus network over the past decade. Out of 14, he found, only two now have faster buses. Both of those cities added new bus-only lanes or traffic signals that allow buses to jump ahead of traffic at the same time. “Every time these agencies did a bus redesign and didn’t also add bus lanes or signal priority, the bus speeds fell,” Dew said.

Evidently I am “illiterate” because I don’t believe that the most likely composition of files comprising this data is hundreds of thousands of pages of plain text. I actually appreciate Bluesky compulsive reply-writers. That’s creative, I wouldn’t expect it. On twitter it was just slurs usually.

This is very funny to me for some reason. Someone actually went to Finder/Explorer and checked the exact file size hoping it would be a compellingly enormous amount and it was only 695 megabytes but they still put it in.

Yes. And this too is about the political economy of DC orgs. White Coat Waste is a rightwing org founded and funded by people who want to destroy the gov’t, and they are hammering wedge issues to do that. Scientists have to pay attention to the flood of rightwing money in politics.
