Protip: review the paper, not the authors. A paper is not a grant proposal and you don't need to critique the PI, just the work. It's actually easy to not mention the authors at all. Instead of "the authors should...", just say "the work should address..." or "the paper would be improved by..."

If you don't like a paper, it is obviously totally fine to point out the issues. But please do NOT make egregious and unpleasant comments about the first author's qualifications. A first author who is usually a trainee. Beyond inappropriate and unprofessional.

I am sick of some media uncritically repeating Rand Paul's misrepresentation of Fauci's journal about the Huanan market. In late Jan 2020, it was a common commentary that the market may not be the origin of the outbreak, b/c of a Lancet paper on early cases ▫️1/6 www.paul.senate.gov/wp-content/u...

It now appears using epi data and genomic data that the first infection was in early December and was not connected to the market. The infections spread among people weeks before the Chinese reported that they were dealing with a new infection and that gave the virus time to establish itself in multigenerational (sustained) spread. Remember, early on the Chinese were saying that there is no human to human transmission and all the original 27 cases were from the market. Now we know the market was not the source, it was the amplifier. Having said that, somewhere the virus jumped from animals to humans.

#Marburg in Uganda is confirmed. Uganda formally reported 1 case to #WHO today. A reliable source tells me there are actually 2 confirmed cases. The positive: Uganda is very good at containing outbreaks. The negative: Uganda doesn't like sharing news about them. Link below goes to updated story.
