Fun to play a small part in this new work led by Tsevi Beatus and team: when the lights go off, honeybees simply stop flying and fall! (unlike flies and mosquitoes, which pull off smart maneuvers) Thanks to Richard Terrile in our lab for turning the lights off on bees, in the name of science 🐝🪰🦟

How much do you trust AI for bird ID? I’ve run all three pictures through Merlin. Wilson’s snipe is the top hit. Common snipe comes up too. Merlin doesn’t give a probability for the matches… Is the ranking due to more training data available for Wilson’s vs commons or is it real? 🪶 #Ornithology

🚨 Bird alert 🪶 Snipe in Nuuk, but which one?! 1st impression was common, but the underwing and birdNET of call suggest Wilson’s, though both are lower quality. Shadows reduced on underwing pic. BirdNET confidence was 8.7% and 1.8% on 2 detections. FYI snipes are rare here; both species possible

We’re looking for recommendations for an affordable camera to film slow motion of tadpole swimming. Doesn’t have to be crazy high tech or water proof, but decent frame rate and resolution to calculate velocity etc. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated 🙏🏼

Delighted to see our paper out today in Proceedings B @royalsocietypublishing.org! We investigated how kittiwakes adapt their activity patterns across latitudes in response to the changing day-night cycle ☀️🌃 In short - we find that Arctic kittiwakes don't have bedtimes.. doi.org/10.1098/rspb... 🧵1/4
