I don't just want to list papers. I want to understand how people have thought about the problem and how this has evolved as our knowledge has increased. This helps situate my work into the larger arc of research. It almost always hints at interesting questions I hadn't thought of. 3/

In the new 2026 CSTA standards, each includes a "Students are not expected to" to help understand what the standard is not. So, what are students not expected to "understand", "apply" or "build"? "math" appears in 31 of the standards! In 27 of those, it appears after "Students are not expected to"

I spent four weeks this summer at math camp with 11-14 year olds: two weeks at Camp Conway, and two weeks at MathPath. I taught algorithms (x2), dynamical systems, graph coloring, math of climate, and probability & Bayesian stats. Two posts about how it went: #ITeachMath

#MathsToday Wrapped up Graph Coloring with game chromatic number and some of the most thorough concept maps I've ever had students (of any level!) create

#MathsToday Everyone's focus is a bit gone, so we ended Bayes with a bunch of problems, including a student-written one that the students acted out!

#MathsToday Using candy sharing on a grid as an exploration to start thinking about ocean GCMs works weirdly well! I thought maybe it would feel contrived (it's a really different set of "rules" for how things work), but it gave students a lot of room to think about how we build models.

#MathsToday bifurcations and hysteresis and snowball Earth in Climate & Chaos! Kind of a technical day, but I'm planning more play and exploration for the next couple of days. Bayes featured the Monty Hall problem but with Glensheep instead of goats.

#MathsToday: Great discussions of energy balance models in Climate & Chaos, and very revealing homework in Conditional Prob & Bayes about what ideas did and didn't fully land today. It's always useful to know where to start tomorrow!
