ironically the main mistake people make about ai *is treating it as a pure software endeavor* when basically all of the main risks come from it needing a gigantic amoung of physical infrastructure
It is certainly true that the tech sector enjoys increasing returns. But it is *not* true that this is a difference from "traditional production industries" - increasing returns are ubiquitous in manufacturing. giftarticle.ft.com/giftarticle/...
Or do we mean poor people who grew up in rural areas, or emigrated there to work? Because that's a WHOLE different kind of "rural outreach" than "talking to farmers" is. Or the "preserving nature" voters.
So when we say "rural outreach"… who do we mean? Rural areas aren't a monolith. Do we mean big landowners & mining interests? Do we mean the rural cousins of urban libs, who tend to come from middle class+ rural families? (not exclusively obvs, but that's who can afford to send kids to college)
So when we say "rural outreach," it's good to be specific about what we mean by that. E.g. way upthread, the article we're talking about is about a lady who was already MAGA back when she was in urban Florida. Way before she bought a farm. Odds are good most of her audience is urban as well.
A very serious Rural Politico once told me "Dems have to go to farmer meetings! We gotta be where the people are!" I was in fact in a farmer meeting at that very moment! So I live-texted him the meeting. They were complaining that they want indentured workers that they don't have to pay or feed.
There would be more pushback if folks left of center were more serious about outreach. But folks aren't despite the fact that our system does give disproportionate power to rural areas. But instead of taking that as the rules of the game as it exists, and actually organizing, we complain about it.
christ if that’s not a metaphor for our times
Is wild to me scientific calculators don’t have a function you can toggle that auto calculates significant figures on calculations #chemsky

The thing about the bricks and minifigs scandal is that it has shown very clearly how ACAB and how the police is not there to help us. Like the body camera footage is wiiiiild. Like I hope this shows privileged people what many BIPOC has been fighting for when we say abolish
Mel Gibson being rehabbed with alacrity after that voicemail was released really should drive this point home.
Everything that is said here and LOUDER for people in the back. I freaking swear WE ARE NOT ACTING ANGRY ENOUGH. Like every fucking college president in the country and democtrat needs to start doing this now
Thoughts on the various Trump administration proposals to revamp US science funding - and what they all have in common:
No one will ever sell to me that these models “chose” to hack stuff. Either they are being told to go look for these things by someone. Or something in their programming is something about play until you cannot stop to open a door. BUT THEY ARE NOT SENTIENT
I want to be clear I am pro-public schools. I will send my kid to public school next year. i am also asking for an exemption so she cannot use AI tutors in fucking Kindergarten. And if they bring a fucking robot into her classroom I am pulling her out
A spokesperson explained that over the past two years, Realbotix has built a new team focused on education, health care, and wellness applications, and that Realbotix and RealDoll do not share employees, payroll, physical locations, or technology. nysfocus.com/2026/07/14/n...
One argument we make in the Postliberal University is that what’s happening in GOP states and federal HE policy is a (partial) departure from neoliberalism not just a nastier continuation of it. It’s guys like Adrian Vermeule who reject (neo)liberalism that inspired us to use the term
HAPPY CAREER SUBMISSION DAY #chemsky May the research gods be with us
Besides this being one of the biggest human rights issues of our lifetimes, this will become the biggest educational issue of the century in this country. Mark my words
The 1997 Flores settlement says children can only be in immigration detention for 20 days. A new legal filing shows that kids at CoreCivic's detention facility in Dilley, TX have been there as long as 323 days, & includes firsthand accounts of the abuse guards are inflicting on children.
My instinct is that they will allow people to finish in 5-6 but will cut short longer stays. But I am pretty sure the real target is destroying OPT
Inside Higher Ed covered it on Thursday when the regime announced they would publish the final rule on Friday, and I thought their reporting was good (although there are still some giant unanswered questions about matters for undergrad students). www.insidehighered.com/news/governm...
This 2007 BBC Northanger Abbey mini series is just freaking delightful
For people that lack the experience/context I arrived to the US in 2014 in an F-1 visa and finished my program in exactly 5 years. Additionally I was under OPT for 1 year. That means 6 years total under F-1 My husband arrived in 2014. Was forced to master out in 2017. Worked in OPT 6mo 1/n

Also isn’t it incredible than in this month I managed to write an NSF IUSE grant from scratch, revise a CAREER grant and outline a third grant for Lego foundation all due between July 15-31
