The Royal Iris - the boat that the Beatles & other Merseyside bands played on. From last week’s viewing of Lowry’s 1963 painting at the Walker Gallery, Liverpool to seeing the boat for real today at Thames-side, Woolwich. Sadly it’s decaying.

‘The Royal Iris’ painted by Lowry ❤️ in 1963 at the Walker Gallery, Liverpool. The Beatles and others played on the boat as it had a dance floor. Paul McCartney mentioned it in ‘That Was Me’ 2007. The boat now decays in the Thames, Woolwich.

The scale and atmosphere of Antony Gormley’s Another Place is an extraordinary & emotional experience. 100 life size cast-iron sculptures of the artist in 17 different moulds are across Crosby beach, looking out to sea. Sand dunes and wildflowers are the backdrop. Stunning 💙

By chance I came across the Banksy statue today. I think it was all the more powerful because of that & its context - surrounded by so many statues and grand buildings. Brilliant & beautiful.

Window for Tate St Ives by Patrick Heron 1992/3. The window is HUGE and one of the largest unleaded coloured-glass windows in the world. The colours are truly stunning. The black line running vertically is a necessary structure to protect it from the weather as the gallery is right next to the sea.
Barbara Hepworth Museum St Ives. Her sculptures seem to get more beautiful and powerful as time goes by.
