What a way to begin my first game of Ghosts of Motley Hall Scrabble.
As long as you don’t get stuck in the tyranny of chart positions, a potentially interesting challenge.
A musical hot take: A Best Of or Greatest Hits should not be more than 12 songs. Double discs, an absolute no, unless you are honest and call it a collection or folio or something
Roger Casement was executed in Pentonville Prison 110 years ago this 3 August (I'm a bit late in catching up). His statue at Dún Laoghaire is fairly recent, though I'm sorry they filled in the sea pool while they were at it. I went on to swim at Sandycove, via my favourite promenade.
Tonight! Frome friends, please come.

I love this podcast.
Writer @garypanton.co.uk gives us the five tracks he’ll meet in Hell! Gary talks about his book series, the Notwitches, and about switching from writing for hire to creating your own characters. He also puts two tracks in Hell that could get him banned from Scotland. Listen podfollow.com/hellish
What a pity ITV haven't recommissioned another series of You Bet!
Oh my god the dietician who is telling everyone in the White House to only eat steak and sauerkraut doesn't wipe his ass.
Whenever I see the phrase 'saying the unsayable' as praise, as if it's a major achievement. The words are perfectly sayable, it's not like they're trying to read aloud the track listing of Drukqs by Aphex Twin.
Funkytown. Kiss. She Drives Me Crazy. What an 80s he had. RIP.

The Establishment Blues is out now and features contributions from the brilliant @whenisbirths.bsky.social , our resident psychologist and a queer, socialist teen all of whom are talking about the journey some heroes take from the counter culture to the feet of the monarch. Sodisappointedpod.com
I’m launching the paperback edition of Breaking: How the Media Works, When it Doesn’t, and Why it Matters on September 1 at The Book Elephant in Elephant & Castle. I’m very lucky to have Juliet Jacques joining me for the Q+A. 🎟️ Ticket details coming very soon.
Three attempts at making it in Britain and it's never really worked. I agree the syntax of answering with the question is so awkward.
Feels like a good day to say out loud: as a lifelong trivia lover (Scholastic Bowl, pub quiz, etc.) I don’t like Jeopardy. The format is annoying AF. The “questions” do not grammatically or factually match the “answers,” so it’s just a tic of saying “what is” to start and it annoys me to no end.
Does Cliff realise that these days you don't have to send them to Boots to get them developed to see how they turned out, and instead you can take them again if you like?
Even more bizarre than that calendar shot of him standing in the sea in a suit with a champagne glass.
Here it is, the piss-de-resistance of Cliff's 2026 calendar. Absolutely marvellous.
Back when I had Twitter I used to offer free headshots for low-income authors, not sure I have much reach here but the offer is still there. London or Birmingham (although I’m in Glasgow and Edinburgh at the end of Aug and can fit in a session. Will have lights so can be indoors).

Willing to believe the science journalist hadn’t seen some of you-know-who’s worst excesses. He’s apologised now. Most of the hacks won’t. Katie Hopkins has an onion in her pocket today, I note.
London loves, won’t you join us please to discuss this extraordinary book, finally being republished to the admiration it so richly deserves
This book is absolutely miraculous. Delighted to say we have an event at Foyles on the 13th August with @amykey.bsky.social @regretteruane.bsky.social Alice Vincent and Megan Hunter- also 🤞🏼, we shall be recieving a phone call from Joan Barfoot during the event! www.foyles.co.uk/events/unear...

NEW: GB News has now spent a year as the leading news channel (though Ofcom treats its shows as "current affairs"). BARB data says it has been ahead of BBC News Channel and Sky News for 12 months in terms of average views. Still losing money, but gaining influence.
Currently this has 98 ratings on Amazon, and if you'd like to help push that total into three figures (especially if you'd like to write a v short review), I will not stand in your way. Particularly if you enjoyed it. Thanks. #IntoTheGroove
