Aug 1957: Key to the Countryside ad from Shell (+Shell’s series of monthly “NATURE STUDIES; Guide to Flowers of the Countryside; and Shell’s “NATURE STUDIES: Birds and Beasts”) «The Key to the Countryside»

This is a magazine advertisement from Shell that shows the different types of trees you can find in August, painted by S.R. BADMIN. It has a list of different types of trees such as Crack Willow, White Willow, Cricket Bat Willow, Weeping Willow, Purple Osier, Osier, Goat Willow of Sallow, Least Willow, Alder, Black Poplar, Swamp Cypress, and Mulberry. At the bottom, the Shell’s “NATURE STUDIES: Birds and Beasts” are available for 7s. The Key to the Countryside Willows by the water add up to much of the summer's green. But the kinds aren't so easily distinguished. Branches of one of the common- est, CRACK WILLOW (1 pollarded; 1A leaves) crack off easily. WHITE WILLOW (2) looks whitish, with leaves silky (2A) and white on both sides. A variety of this kind is CRICKET BAT WILLOW (3), cut young for bats. Its leaves (3A) are blue- green on top. WEEPING WILLOW (4) is a native of China. Basket willows include PURPLE OSIER (5) with bark full of bitter salicin, forerunner of the chemist's tablets of aspirin or salicylic acid (i.e. acid of willow, Latin salix) and the COMMON OSIER (6). Leaves of GOAT WILLOW OF SALLOW (7, 7A) are broad and softly white underneath. The alpine LEAST WILLOW (8) creeps by under- ground rhizomes about our mountains. ALDER (9), ripe fruits (9A), old cone-like catkins (9B), next year's catkins (9c) and knobbly trunked trees of BLACK POPLAR (10 and 10A) like damp ground. So does the uncommon SWAMP CYPRESS from the Mississippi (11 and 11A), whose roots develop aerial 'knees' (118) in very wet places. Another planted foreigner, the MULBERRY (12 and 12A) came, with leaves for silk worms and delicious fruits for us, from Persia. Shell's series of monthly "NATURE STUDIES: Fossils, Insects and Reptiles", which gave so many people pleasure last year, is published in book form by Phoenix House Ltd. at 7s. The Shell Guide to "Flowers of the Countryside" and Shell's "NATURE STUDIES: Birds and Beasts" are also available at 7s. each. On sale at bookshops...
