Figuring out why Ossoff is so effective is an interesting task. I think he's mastering a kind of stern dignity that is uniquely compelling in contrast to the clownish cruelty of the other side. I think the other person who's kind of hit on the same thing is AOC, though in a different register

Ossoff: "I think Pete Hegseth is frankly a deeply unwell person who seems to relish this kind of brutality all the while he's running a department that is falling into chaos. The guy cannot run the military competently and is spending his time with this kind of obscene medieval spectacle."

It's telling that men would rather try to invent tech to replace humans' role in caregiving than step up as equal partners in parenting. Telling, that is, in that it shows how financial capitalism and patriarchy work together to dissuade men from doing "unprofitable" labor, like the work of care.

My wife: Can you read our baby a book?
Me: I can just play an audiobook from my phone.
My wife: But then it won't be in your voice.
Me: I can train a voice model.
Parenting hits different when you work in Al.

Every geoengineering 'solution' to climate change depends, ultimately, on both being conducted at large scale (spatially) and being sustained (temporally) over many decades and likely centuries in order to be effective. Let alone on a globally-agreed governance framework to avoid armed conflict.

These delays (and the rising polls) make me think an early election is more likely. Put back all the hard decisions, milquetoast Budget with a few give-aways and go while the right is most divided (and the Greens in turmoil). Because otherwise these difficult decisions are not going to go away.

Milburn report pushed to after budget because there is no money for his recommendations. Defence spending pushed back too. Spending review is going to be a nightmare.

The Tories have announced they would abolish Natural England, support a Third Runway & pull the UK out of the Aarhus Convention - in further signs they’ve totally given up on Middle England, don’t give a toss about the environment & just want to please some wealthy grouse moor owners & raving YIMBYs

Tory party press release: “[We will leave the Aarhus] Convention that powers the lawfare hindering every major infrastructure project in this country.”

“Abolish Natural England and the Environment Agency, moving to a more streamlined regulatory landscape to protect our environment.”Tory PR: “Support a Third Runway at Heathrow Airport and wider expansion, increasing capacity to deliver cheaper flights, better connections for passengers, and more exports of high-value British goods.”

Why must it always be about planting trees, when they managed just fine for 100s of millions of years before people came along? Just let them seed out. Yes, planting does have a role, but so often the underlying subtext is continued human domination of nature. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Baddies will destroy liberal order to play chicken with climate disaster. They don’t care about the rest of us. We can build better but the window to get in the fight is closing. We have to stop appealing to moral authority here.

This year has been brutal, and like most people you probably want to do more about climate change. But what, and how? Great news – I’ve written just the book for you! It’s called What One Person Can Do and it’s a clear and simple how-to guide, a roadmap to help you make influential changes...

A thing I would write about if I wrote about media: The rise of the semi-pro Facebook news creator. Last year's algo changes deprioritised things you follow/friends. Now my feed is just turbocharged with random activists/angry people/auditors who create grabby content and earn a few £100 a month.

A government cannot balance its current budget while starving the economy of the investment it needs. That is not fiscal prudence, it is deferred economic insecurity – and the UK’s lagging public and private investment are its outcome. New piece on what fiscal rules are actually for.

Fiscal Rules Should Serve Britain’s Future

Earlier this month, in his first major speech as the UK’s new Chancellor, John Healey stood in Coventry and reiterated his commitment to “fiscal discipline”. It is not hard to understand why: the UK…

It’s extraordinary that as we breach 1.5° - which only in 2018, the IPCC said wouldn’t be reached until 2040 - that the PM is still holding up net zero by 2050 as an adequate response!

The threat level has changed dramatically since the UK adopted its NZ by 2050 aim. Just a few examples: 🧵

Oh FFS. Increases in a few species is not a positive from climate change It is a signal that communities & ecosystems are under threat from rapid change Please, BBC, don’t do this simplistic reporting, feeding complacency about climate breakdown www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
