A quick wrap of Queens' 2026 Summer Streets. Everyone I spoke with said we need more events, year-round, that last longer and also are inter-connected! And really cleaver of NYC DOT to start it off with a road race that at least 1,000 people took part in! Smart stuff. @openplans.org

Tomorrow's combination of dangerous heat and unhealthy air is a serious threat to New Yorkers’ health. If you can, stay somewhere cool with air conditioning, limit time outdoors, drink plenty of water, and check on your neighbors — especially older New Yorkers and anyone with a health condition.

Why take such positive news and frame it like this? Are parking spots more important than cleaner, more accessible streets, with fewer rats? Trash containerization benefits absolutely everyone in NYC… car owners and non-car owners alike!

Mayor Mamdani’s crusade for faster buses will take another big step this summer when the Department of Transportation puts bus lanes in both directions on E. 116th Street in East Harlem, where buses today crawl at just 4 miles per hour.
