His infamous bother, the “crack smoking Toronto Mayor” Rob Ford, first popularized the lie about a #WarOnCars to divide urban/suburban voters and rage-farm. Now his brother Doug ramps up the real #WarOnWalking, biking and transit, weakening the city and costing everyone money and lives. #UrbanTruth

So excited for this. JSK transformed the streets of the city I grew up in, and I can't wait to ask her how we can level up for generations to come. I hope to see many of you there, this is going to be an epic evening!
Less than a month until our big live show at Hunter College on Fri, Nov 6th w/ Janette Sadik-Khan. We'll be celebrating her pioneering street transformations AND looking ahead as Mayor Mamdani now has a chance to make NYC streets truly world class. Tickets: host.nxt.blackbaud.com/registration...
I was not expecting to be this emotional listening to this episode…the way she captures the beauty of cities…and the joy of living in them
We talked with Chicago Transit Authority acting president Nora Leerhsen about the joys & challenges of running a system with annual ridership of more than 330 million, what kids can teach us about transit, & the role of public transportation in our democracy. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/r...
Dutch cycling infrastructure during the school run, showing why safe infrastructure is vital if we want children to cycle to school. From a fietsstraat, where bikes have priority, to protected cycle tracks where cars must give way to bikes at every junction. Safe, convenient cycling for everyone.
I would not describe myself as a transit nerd, but I was a bit geeked out and captivated by the stories in this episode. Really interesting!

My cousin is a senior director at a major tier 1 auto supplier. Biggest car guy I know. Used to own a F150 Raptor. Texted me out of the blue asking if I heard of the book “Life After Cars”. His coworker recommended it to him and he’s loving it. Unreal!! @thewaroncars.bsky.social

“Someone with a 1-hr car commute needs to earn 40% more to be as happy as someone with a short walk to work. On the other hand, if someone shifts from a long commute to a walk, their happiness increases as much as if they’d fallen in love.” #CityMakingMath 50 reasons for more walkable streets.

Midtown Atlanta's bicycle network is starting to come together, and it's looking great. I had nothing to do with these projects (thank you to those who did), but I always love opportunities to help shake Atlanta's car-centric reputation. Catch nearly 10 types of bicycle lane treatments in < 4min.
Normally my kids get themselves to school but today I did carline. If you do it regularly, it would take 1 hr out of your day and that’s 5 hours a week, 20 hours a month, etc. You could literally learn a foreign language instead. It’s not life, it’s the waste of it.
It’s not the bikes, it’s not the phones, ITS THE DRIVERS. Until there are real consequences for this reckless violence, our kids will be in danger every single day of their lives.

Autumn weather has truly set in this week, proving that if the infrastructure is good enough, people will ride their bikes. Regardless. Bad weather and inappropriate clothing are just poor excuses.
just to emphasize what's happening here: BMW (a company that used slave labor under the Nazis) refused to provide an official vehicle to the ultra right-wing AfD party, which is now asking Elon Musk to provide a Tesla instead Tesla literally becoming the Nazi car brand
The party is now turning to the man who has been the go-to person for those suffering from spontaneous contractions of the right arm, and who has already provided them with strong support in recent years.
“While we are heartened by these positive and tangible first steps," the [Gag] family wrote, "the City of Boston must act with more urgency moving forward — both in their rapid response to serious and fatal crashes and in their commitment to advance projects designed to make streets safer….”
City leaders announced Friday that the intersection of Tremont and Parker Streets will see a “number of street upgrades,” including a bike lane that will be separated from traffic by parked cars. The city will also paint new white lines at nearby intersections.

In 2019, after 17 people were killed riding their bicycles in 6 monhts, advocates staged a die-in in Washington Square Park rightfully shaming Mayor de Blasio for doing nothing. The signs and chants did not hold back, saying the mayor had blood on his hands...

This is a form of social-media-induced psychosis where someone sees one post and thinks it represents the sum total of a movement. Tom Flood creates a wide range of images, from the stark and direct to to lighthearted and humorous. And anyway, you don't need to be polite to Doug Ford of all people.
Schrödinger's drivers: Simultaneously the grown-ups of the road who are very keen to remind you that you're only allowed out under sufferance & if you're not on your best, most obsequious behaviour they might just kill you while simultaneously also the world's smollest softest most put-upon beans.
So much of the tone policing of safe streets advocates boils down to, "It's mean to make drivers feel uncomfortable." This is of course something we see across all kinds of social and political movements that challenge some dominant force.
And , not that this is a requirement for being a good transit system leader (although maybe it should be!), can you imagine Dorval Carter going on The War on Cars podcast like Nora Leerhsen did recently?
