Tara pushed her head through the gap in the balcony door and nudged it open, squinting in the orange-pink light of early morning. She swished her tail, crouched, and lept onto the railing. With a few precise twitches of her wings, she balanced herself and tested the spot with a few stamps of her paws. She blinked slowly in the warmth of the still-rising summer sun, then dipped into a luxurious stretch (Mr. Dekarios was not awake yet and therefore not here to add “biiig stretch,” which always made it more satisfying). A little shiver traveled up and down her spine, from tail tip to toes; she wiggled her front toes, then dug her claws into the wood (on the other hand, Mr. Dekarios was also not here to bark at her to “stop scratching the daylights out of the tower, Tara!”). She finished the stretch with a fang-baring yawn and a little squeak.

Suddenly, Donut stopped short and hissed. I stopped too and looked around, holding my fists an inch apart, ready to activate my gauntlets. “What? What is it?”

Donut backed up a few steps, her back arched and hair poofed out.

DONUT: THAT, CARL. IT’S AN ABOMINATION. A FREAK, CARL. IT’S LIKE IF A RAGAMUFFIN HAD SEX WITH ONE OF MORDECAI’S UGLY COUSINS.

CARL: A…what? What’s a ragamuffin?

DONUT: IT’S A BREED OF CAT, CARL. A MADE-UP, JOHNNY-COME-LATELY—

CARL: Okay, okay, I get it.

DONUT: HONESTLY, CARL. READ A BOOK.

I sighed and rolled my eyes. “God dammit, Donut,” I said out loud.

A few more moments of searching, and I found what she was talking about. A large cat with long fur in spots of black, tan, and white pawed at a glowing purple portal embedded in the rock face. Only, there was something different about this cat; it had wings.

The wizard sighed and took off the ring reluctantly. Out of all three pests, he trusted Ide the most, "Please don't drop it, it's a gift," he warned, handing it over.

The child carefully took the ring and put it on her index finger. It was far too big, but she gazed at it, captivated, "It is beautiful," Ide murmured slowly, "Who gave it to you?"

Rolan couldn't help but smile a little, "Nimriel did."

Hearing the name, Mirkon swiftly got excited, "Lady Nimriel?!"

Rolan chuckled at hearing those two words in the same sentence, "Yes, Lady Nimriel."

Mirkon's eyes widened at the mention of the beloved hero, "Yay! That means you're getting married!"
