I’ve long felt there is a need to bridge Lewin’s (and Gibson’s) idea of affordances and the volitional part of MOHO. Yes we encounter affordances but why do some things SOLICIT us or repel us? Merleau-Ponty is good on that and so is Donn Welton in this book.

I like MOHO because it pays heed to the lived body but in many ways it could be improved with closer attention to phenomenological ideas like intentionality (which I think should be a part of Volition, along with interests, values and personal causation). #occupationaltherapy
Every therapeutic environment offers a particular world. Paediatric Occupational Therapy should ask what kinds of world we are inviting children to inhabit. #occupationaltherapy
Autistic ppl are so diverse that there are no well-replicated subgroups by separate research teams, and diagnoses should be descriptive rather than prescriptive - support needs to be personalized and based on need. Meanwhile, some carry a specific anti-neurodiversity agenda w/ "profound autism". 1/

I’m interested in both sides of this debate the Reynolds / Fisher perspective and Joe Muggs’s response. But something that’s missing from Joe’s analysis is how pop culture was or at least seemed to be a strong vessel for political and societal change. I don’t see that happening now.

I was at the Brian Eno / Ece Temelkuran exhibitions in Parma, Italy yesterday and apart from being beautiful, which they certainly are, they can inspire us all to think differently about how we can positively influence the atmospheres of the spaces we inhabit.

Narrative - some OT students struggle to get heads round it. There’s a video of the South Park writers explaining it. Plots aren’t “this happened, then that, then that…” but rather “this happened, and because this happened, then that had to happen”. Occupational narrative is just like that - a story

This is really good; very nicely put visual. I think / hope (!) I work this way partly through having had a great role model early on in my paeds OT career and partly through my deep interest in phenomenology.

That's the right answer and the right length. Behaviourism fails because it describes what organisms do without asking what they experience. Phenomenology starts from experience. Intersubjectivity explains how experiences coordinate. 4,975 words might be generous.

More on the moral panic about smartphone-related “brain rot”. In this BBC interview journalist Joss Fong states that there is no scientific evidence scrolling causes permanent damage to our focus, but then immediately says “but we don’t need scientific evidence to make those judgements”. 🤦♂️
