What the last months have revealed, is that the USA has so weakened itself that it could not protect its allies in the Pacific from China. However, now the US government is admitting that officially. The whole Trumpian pivot to confront China was a sham. apnews.com/article/airc...

US pulls last aircraft carrier in Asia as Trump focuses on Iran and the Western Hemisphere

President Donald Trump’s war against Iran is stretching the limits of the nation’s aircraft carriers and leaving the western Pacific without one of the key American warships.

Some NYT interlocutors expect mobilization in Russia, but only after the parliamentary elections in September. Another part fears that Putin, feeling cornered, "may try to escalate the war and test the solidarity of NATO, going beyond the scope of hybrid attacks in Europe."

So, in the last two days the Trump Administration sent the commander of Centcom to speak to the sailors on USS Abraham Lincoln, and confirmed that a replacement carrier is on the way. IOW, they confirmed all the stories of the crisis on the carrier.

Actually, one more - I feel like I should say this directly, so here goes. In the 90s and 00s, the groups I remember pursuing this strategy (hyperpublicize mugshots, Black crime statistics, etc) were Stormfront, the Klan, etc. Now it's the New York Times and the Telegraph. That is the story here.

Good thread. I'd also add that throughout all this (and still continuing) there have been smaller but still intense media and social media pile ons against those involved in hiring Arday at CU or even working in the same Faculty but ottherwise unconnected. 1/2

Ok, some thoughts, as an olde tyme academic, on the Arday tragedy. First, allegations about causes. We don't know what was in his mind, but many people are keen to blame him, or woke lefties/academia, or the media. Some people are absolutely certain that the media are faultless. 1/

And, no, this isn't just 'legitimate public scutiny' or 'accountability'. Some of it is vitriolic personal abuse. I've even seen posts asking 'where does X [one of those people] live so we can go round and show her what we think of her?'. It's intimidation. And, to repeat, it's still happening. 2/2

Philosophers often bring up the "principle of charity": a willingness to assume good faith in an interlocutor and treat them accordingly. It's good to do in many circumstances. But it is worth formulating a principle of not being a fucking mark. If not during the rise of fascism, then when? 12/

Economists are sounding the alarm over Ofgem’s recent hike to its energy price cap. If Ofgem's role is: "to protect the interests of energy consumers," why has it allowed households’ average gas and electricity bills to rise by £221, or 13%, to £1,862 per year, a huge above inflation increase?

Russians snap up new homes built on Ukraine 'graveyard'. "They're building on human bones, and fast, to eradicate the traces of their crimes," said Kira Sosnovsky. 90% of buildings in Mariupol were damaged or destroyed in the 2022 siege. It is estimated that tens of thousands of people were killed.

You and I — all of us taxpayers — funded this $533 million artillery plant outside of Dallas. It hasn’t produced a single usable shell. Yet the defense contractor, General Dynamics, has never been held publicly accountable. Nor has it had to pay a penny back… 1/
