Huge congrats to @pablolopezbust.bsky.social on successfully defending PhD! His work on dry forest seed dispersal at local to macro spatial scales provides new insight into these complex systems (even gomphotheres make a cameo!). Enhorabuena Dr. López-Bustamante!

Pringamosa, Malamujer, Bull nettle, whatever you call it, it’s left us all with some itchy, "warm" memories from the field. 🌿 Check out this short story on Cnidoscolus urens, a beautiful herb of the tropical dry forest! 🎙️#scicomm #tropicalecology @phippsconservatory.bsky.social

What a great experience! With Martin’s support @dovciak-lab.bsky.social and a wonderful collaboration, we measured seed masses for around 9,000 seeds and over 1,000 tropical dry forest species at the NYBG herbarium @nybg.bsky.social. Thanks so much, Martin! 🌿🔬"

🌎🌐🍁It’s been a pleasure to work with @pablolopezbust.bsky.social @nybg.bsky.social! The data on dry tropical forest seed traits that he assembled @hulshof.bsky.social lab @ VCU with the help of our undergrads @sunyesf.bsky.social is invaluable. What a great experience for the students too!

What does a changing forest sound like? 🌳🎼 Check out work by @pablolopezbust.bsky.social Data sonification of 30 years of seed dispersal patterns from a #ForestGEO dry forest in #CostaRica Supported by Botany in Action Phipps grant and NSF! 🍃 Listen here: www.pablolopez-bustamante.com/forestition

🌎🌐🍁Exciting experiment completed! 🌱 Our lab helped MS student Daniel Wehner wrap up a greenhouse study on how arbuscular mycorrhizal inoculum from understory plants may aid sugar maple seedling establishment in high-elevation ectomycorrhizal forests under climate warming. Stay tuned for results!

Nearly 50% of Earth's land cover and upwards of 70% of Biodiversity Hotspots are extreme environments. Yet many ecological theories fail in these habitats. Here, we explain why and showcase what extreme environments can tell us in a world of new extremes. #Fulbright dx.doi.org/10.1002/ecs2...

Extreme environments in a world of new extremes

Extreme environments, whether defined by climate, soils, or disturbance, at landscape or micro-scales, are prevalent across Earth's surface and have long served as crucibles for ecological and evolut...

Looking for some interesting ecological data sets for some class projects. Want to go past the typical sets and expand some options. Ideally not large but not tiny, no time series, and include at least three factors. Let me know if you got any leads!

Where does everyone send their tropical plant samples for species identification using DNA barcoding? Guelph?🙏 Leaves are preferable, but if the leaves are too high for pole pruner, what then? Cambium? Thanks for any leads.

Please pass along, I’m recruiting PhD students to join our Macroecology Lab @uofa-eeb.bsky.social We study phys ecology, macroecology, biodiversity - spanning scaling, trait-based ecology, theory, comparative biology & ecoinformatics. Several avenues for funding. Please reach out if interested🧪🌐🌾

Excited to launch Big Red Pen, grant review services, because NSF funding is only getting tougher, but strong proposals still rise to the top. I have decades of NSF success and 10 years of panel experience. Let’s get funded. #NSF from #GRFP to #CAREER. biodiversityresearchlab.com/grant-review
