Might be on interest for my ecology friends here 🧪, we shown how even 40 years of observations does not rarefy completely diversity of insect groups with prevalent dark taxa (looking at you, 🪰) @flygirlnhm.bsky.social @steveormerod.bsky.social @stephenbheard.bsky.social @cschaboo.bsky.social
Insect decline usually focuses on species we can name. But "dark taxa" like true flies kept revealing new species over 37-years of sampling a German stream, while well-studied mayflies/stoneflies/caddisflies plateaued with far fewer individuals. doi.org/10.1111/icad... @swarmofthoughts.bsky.social

Why haven't 🐺 in 🇪🇸 expanded their range despite lots of suitable habitat? It may be due to high resident mortality! A 10% reduction in mortality in established packs could double the occupied range, even if disperser mortality doesn't change: besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

The complex interactive effects of global change stressors and cascading species interactions require integrative approaches that study and conserve ecosystems beyond individual species. This was a beautiful collaborative experience with colleagues from EBD
🧪 Mediterranean ecosystems are changing fast & in dynamic, interconnected ways, but we rarely look at the interconnections. Doñana National Park is a great example of how multiple global-change drivers ripple through ecosystems via species interactions, trophic cascades, and habitat change. 🌍🧩
