No more cars on Oxford Street! (London's biggest shopping street) I took a walk down the whole length of the new pedestrianised section to see what it's like. I can't wait to see how it develops. New public space is so exciting!

Cars act as "thermal batteries," absorbing solar radiation and releasing it as heat. A study in Lisbon (applicable to any dense city) found a black car can raise the surrounding air temperature by 2°C (3.6°F) compared to a white car Now add 3 million cars to a city …

"Crack-up capitalism" by Quinn Slobodian. Capitalism loves authoritarianism and non-democratic economic "zones" "perforating" the nation-state. Liberal capitalism becomes the exception even in the West as we're told by libertarian eccentrics that Dubai dystopia is the model to follow.

Oxford, the longest running continuous weather station in UK history, with temperature observations stretching back to 1815, has preliminarily broken its maximum temperature record for May yesterday by OVER 3ºC with a temperature of 33.7ºC. Unprecedented in its 211-year history.

Spaghetti chart showing Oxford Radcliffe Observatory daily maximum temperatures for every day of the year from 1815 to 2026. 211 years of historical data are shown as very faint grey lines tracing a seasonal cycle from around 5°C in winter to a summer peak of roughly 25–30°C in July and August. A blue smoothed 30-day mean line highlights the average annual temperature cycle. The 2026 line is shown in bold red, running from January through to late May before spiking sharply upward to reach 33.7°C on 26 May, well above the entire historical grey envelope for that time of year. A single dashed red reference line marks the previous May record of 30.6°C set on 29 May 1944. The 2026 reading exceeds this by 3.1°C and, in statistical terms, is the 6th most anomalous maximum temperature in Oxford's 211-year record, ranking as the most anomalous May maximum ever observed and coming within 0.6°C of the all-time June record of 34.3°C set in 1976.

Arrest him and his cabinet secretaries and judge them all for their crimes. Not doing so effectively kills the Geneva convention. The world of tomorrow will no longer be based on the rule of law. We all lose.

Spanish PM Pedro Sánchez: “Today more than ever, it is essential to remember that one can be against a hateful regime as is the case with the Iranian regime…and at the same time be against an unjustified, dangerous military intervention outside of international law.”

Spot the difference between the world's economy and the actions of national or regional politicians. This was foretold many years ago in the car sector. At the most macro of levels, trade is continuing despite efforts at restraint. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Chinese automakers built nearly one in 10 passenger cars sold in Europe last month, a record share that caps a year of rapid growth led by brisk sales of hybrid and battery-powered vehicles.

The Trump disbelief that the Norwegian govt doesn't control the Nobel process is deeply indicative of his thinking. He can't conceive that an institution could (or should) be genuinely independent of coercion or political power. That's the change he represents.

Trump: "I should have gotten the Nobel prize for each war...I saved millions and millions of people...and don't let anyone tell you that Norway doesn't control the shots. It's in Norway. Norway controls the shots. It's a joke. They've lost such prestige.“
