☁️ Yesterday evening, a giant hole suddenly opened in the clouds over Mount Hood, Oregon. Known as a Fallstreak Hole, this rare phenomenon forms when supercooled cloud droplets freeze into ice crystals, leaving behind a dramatic circular opening in the sky.

Two AI accounts wanting to connect and stay in touch with each other in the mentions of a post I wrote about AI is fucking hellscape material.
There’s some weird zombie malls like Lincolnwood (RIP) or Northbrook that have effectively become weird Backrooms with strange shops and offbrand children amusement centers for winter months. Apocalyptic almosts
tell me about your town’s weird mall
Not here because it's a left-leaning site, here because I see this as a renewed vision of the internet.
Thanks. Yes, that's what I was trying to say, but took too long to get there. Our politics community is strong, and I'd love for us to expand into new communities. Science and sports have already taken off. Birding, gardening, K-pop, we're open to all (except nazis and jerks).
On the flip side now that I think about it, there’s no good alternative to have a platform neutral version of this without permissioned data that inherits trust. Otherwise, the options are Google or similar
I suppose with permissioned data you could do something liked this but i think i’d be wary with exact location for quite some time until its super secure and trusted. Here icloud is battle tested so it inherits the security guarantees from there
You can get a gist of the app here checkonyou.app I plan to clean up the copy and theme
Check On You
A warm way to know your people are okay. Pair with someone you trust and either of you can check on the other — and you're always told when they did. No servers, no tracking. Just your iCloud.

Well here’s a testflight beta for the app CheckOnYou. Pairing is tricky cuz you need an email - but other than that im very pleased with it so far! Sadly no atproto integration since i piggy back off AppleId for icloud storage testflight.apple.com/join/wPSK5Kj6

My primary use case is thinking of what an approach to location tracking for my future angsty tern would be and how it could feel less invasive. Its currently on cloudkit and uses icloud data cuz i dont trust storing anything location wise on my own. I’ll try and get it out on the store
There were 37 homicides in the city last month, the lowest total for any such month dating back to at least 1970. That total is down 18% compared to July 2025, and is less than half the totals of July 2020 and 2021, which each saw more than 100 killings.

I _really_ love the idea of a "lifeline" of a post and characterizing its spread through the network. romiojoseph.github.io/bluesky/blue... Thanks again @ruoshuiresearch.bsky.social for sharing. I started digging in (see screenshot) and will try to create a taxonomy and write up sometime soon.
Bluesky's new CEO Toni Schneider on the platform's reputation for being a liberal bubble: "Yes, we definitely want that to change. It is already changing. It certainly wasn’t designed to attract one specific group of people."
Total precipitation for the month, measured at O’Hare Airport, was 5.36 inches. That’s 1.65 inches more than typically falls in July, but almost all of the rain was recorded on just three days: July 2-3 and July 27.
July in Chicago Was Hotter and Wetter Than Normal, Weather Service Says
A pair of storms on the front and back ends of July made for a wetter month than normal, according to a National Weather Service summary.

It’s still shocking to me that I can build a full-fledged app by talking to my phone and then it will build deploy and release and I can see the update. It’s the future plain and simple
the title is hyperbolic, but this video actually paints bluesky in a decent light relative to X, and the comments section is quite illuminating and praising of bluesky

The fact the chicago 311 app doesnt take normal phone photos since theyre too large is the type of thing that is not a big deal and also a huge deal. Little frictions grind the gears of gov
Once permission data is live - the concept of a group that persists across different apps feels so powerful. Like ldap but for your personal life. Thinking of family photo sharing for example.
Gonna call this the McLuhan Heat death of the media universe. Not hot or cold but tepid, washed out, demands nothing of the audience.

Reddit is testing a new way to watch — and listen to — its viral posts | TechCrunch
Reddit is developing a new video experience that lets users watch — or simply listen to — its most popular posts, taking inspiration from the viral TikTok videos that pair Reddit stories with gameplay or other footage. CEO Steve Huffman said the feature is already in the works and could begin testing later this year.

Happy Friday! I've been building towards an "Atmosphere OS", where my atproto account is the identity layer on a real phone. I wrote a little bit about it here:
On an Atmosphere OS
What if an Atmosphere account could handle email, groupware, and device-level identity without putting Google or Apple at the center?

People rightly love the For You feed but I’ve been trying a “smart mix” from @opentrough.com and it is really good. I have it mixing from For You, Followers, Mutuals and Quiet Posters and it’s nice to get out of the For You bubble a little opentrough.com
