Does anyone have any research notebooks they love and recommend? I’ve been using the old school mead composition notebooks but I’d prefer someone that lays flat. Bonus points if it can do that without a spiral binding!

I finally figured out why AI causes such a visceral reaction in thinking humans: I am writing my book chapter on PLAY, and AI is the opposite of play. We play for the joy of the process, not for the outcome. Yes it is nice to win, to have the art/ poem, but the point of life is to play.

question for those who work outside of academia: is your preeminent trade publication almost singlemindedly devoted to destroying your profession, or is that just a thing for us?

I give my math students solutions and tell them I deliberately made 0, 1, or 2 mistakes. They have to decide which. Following someone else’s logic is often harder than doing it yourself. I am skeptical that students can ‘evaluate’ GenAI output in a way conducive to learning, at least not at scale.

Reading this thread I simply cannot fathom the speed with which some scholars *resign* their vocation the moment the option to defer to AI arises. I fought many years for the privilege to write and teach. Even if AI *could* do my job (it can’t) they will have to pry it from my cold dead hands
