Just found out that Billy Martin has been publishing horror fiction again under his old pen name, Poppy Z. Brite. I was a huge fan back in the '90s. No doubt this is old news for many.

There was a time when Aotearoa had reason to be proud of what was being accomplished in the arts on the world stage. To the point where it was actively driving tourism. The burning down of funding means there'll soon be very little that even exists, apart from hobbyists and the independently wealthy

Wait, which business did he build? He worked at Unilever from 1993 until 2011 and at Air New Zealand from 2011 until 2019. Both were around for decades before he was born. I can't find any record of him ever founding or owning a business.

Yes, and I'd love for anyone criticising the "meanness" of Emily Wilson's Odyssey review to have to sit down and read the attacks on her for the the first line of her translation to see what "shockingly harsh language" really looks like.

It seems to me that a renowned classicist who's translated both of Homers's epics should be allowed to have some reckons about an adaptation of The Odyssey. Wilson had to endure far meaner and much more personal attacks for her translations than anything she's directed at the movie.

People who say "use AI or get left behind," what are they using it for that's supposedly getting them ahead? A senior manager told us they use it to draft emails. I've been writing emails for 30 years without hand-holding. It's easy. Certainly easier than proofreading an AI draft for factual errors.
It's been a long time since I met her but the Marilyn Monroe mannequin at the old 'Hollywood Legends' diner in Norfolk, UK, still haunts my dreams, and not in a way that I find at all enjoyable.
Sunrise at 5am when I get up, sunset at 9pm when I go to bed. Obviously the ideal system and everyone else is wrong.

This reminds me of Douglas Adams railing against jokes that require the audience buying into a false premise to be funny. In this case it's "knowing" that the pyramids were built by slaves (which isn't true).

Is the wallpaper in Spider-man's house tattered and torn from where he thoughtlessly tries to climb interior walls?
Has anyone turned one of those stupid singing fish trophy things into a speaker? Could you put 35 of them on individual poles in a circle, connect them to a 35-channel recording of a choral piece, and stand in the middle to be enveloped by the beautiful voices of 35 individual fish?
Just read The Valley by Asher Emanuel. Will likely be the best new book I read this year, it's a true crime story about a couple of low-level offenders falling through not just gaps but chasms in the NZ criminal justice system. I grew up with guys like Nathan and Rikihana. Essential reading IMO.
Not impressed with the selections made by those luvvies at the Penthouse for "Cult Cinema." A cult movie is something outside of the mainstream, a movie that does things its own way, which most people don't like but the people who do, really really REALLY like it. Not a universally beloved classic.
