**Background:** Learning that one is autistic can be a pivotal turning point in self-understanding, but people learn about their diagnosis under very different conditions. How these conditions shape autistic people’s experiences remains underexamined, especially for people diagnosed in childhood who learn about their diagnosis later and those in non-Western contexts.

**Methods:** We interviewed 22 formally diagnosed autistic adults in South Korea: 11 who sought a diagnosis in adolescence/adulthood and 11 who were diagnosed in childhood but learned about it later. Some learned directly, while others discovered their diagnosis unexpectedly. We analyzed interviews using reflexive thematic analysis.

**Results:** Learning about the diagnosis was an identity-relevant turning point involving mixed emotions. Participants described moving from self-blame toward greater self-understanding while grieving time spent not knowing. How the diagnosis was disclosed, available support, and prior understanding of autism influenced whether it became valuable self-knowledge or a source of stigma. Supportive disclosure included avoiding stigma or idealization, considering timing and readiness, building trust, and providing follow-up support.

**Conclusion:** Autistic people should have access to their diagnosis to support self-determined identity development. Neuro-affirming training for parents and professionals and broader stigma-reduction efforts are needed in South Korea.
