The labor union representing POLITICO and E&E News. Ink-stained wretches of the world, unite!
Months after telling staff that the E&E News brand was not going away, POLITICO is shuttering six publications. A statement from PEN Guild's leadership: This is unacceptable.

Our @pen-guild.bsky.social union took on our bosses after they launched an AI tool (in violation of our contract) that churned out inaccurate reports. It was a years-long fight, but today we won. A neutral arbitrator ruled in our favor. The tool is shutting down. www.pen-guild.org/news/victory...

Damn. That is indeed some awesome talent lost to a buyout
Lots of E&E News greats are walking out the door today. A true tragedy.

At least 19 of our @eenews.bsky.social Politico Pro colleagues have decided to take the buyout and leave us this week. It's no small amount. Not everyone was offered a buyout @politico.com 1/4

Unit chairs at @baltsunguild.bsky.social & @pen-guild.bsky.social joined @middayonwypr.bsky.social to talk about their outlets' use of AI. AI can be a tool to support journalists, but news organizations have deployed it in unethical ways without a human behind it. www.wypr.org/show/midday/...

in understanding the impact of the Trump administration’s policies. The extraordinary decision to execute a search warrant at a journalist’s home should shock and dismay everyone who cares about a free and independent press. (2/3)
The Washington Post Guild is alarmed and appalled by federal law enforcement’s search and seizure of reporter Hannah Natanson’s property and personal devices. Hannah is a valued member of our union whose work covering the federal workforce has been essential (1/3)

3/ Journalists at the recently unionized Grist Magazine won job protections. @pacnwguild.bsky.social
2/ Our members at Ziff Davis won job and salary protections, the creation of an AI subcommittee and language protecting editorial integrity. @zdcreatorsguild.bsky.social
More than 50 contracts across our union include language that directly addresses artificial intelligence. Earlier this week, we released our demands #NewsNotSlop ➡️ www.newsnotslop.org/demands We’re highlighting some of the best contract language enforcing these demands in the workplace here:
Today, unionized nonprofit newsrooms across the country are standing shoulder-to-shoulder to demand that news industry leaders agree to common-sense guardrails around the implementation of artificial intelligence to protect the integrity, quality and accuracy of our journalism.
Hi 👋 It has been a while since you’ve heard from us, but we’re standing side-by-side with other @nyguild.bsky.social shops to send a clear, simple message: News, not slop. Readers deserve journalism crafted by human hands. Here's how we've been fighting back during collective bargaining 👇
This after Insider laid off 25 % of staff in May. We stand in solidarity with Insider Guild. Readers deserve #newsnotslop written by humans, for humans.
In a note to staff, Business Insider EIC Jamie Heller says the publication is launching a pilot program called Business Insider AI News Desk that will use AI to “help publish quick news stories.” Several stories a day will now be “created by AI and edited by a person.”
There's no excuse for ProPublica's position on this issue. We need a fair contract, with real job security and GAI guardrails, now!
Additionally, management struck out: 1️⃣ Language that would prevent GAI from producing editorial work 2️⃣ A requirement that AI-generated content be clearly labeled and reviewed by human editors
It's simple — @propublica.org workers should not be replaced by artificial intelligence. Our contract proposal specifically says that generative artificial intelligence ("GAI") should not be used to replace employees. Management struck out this entire section in their response to our proposal.
Workers can regulate AI with strong contract language. Full stop. Unionized journalists just proved this at POLITICO. @pen-guild.bsky.social
