Perhaps the biggest difference between video game and board game design is that a successful video game designer will work on a single project for 7 years, while a successful board game designer will have 7 games published in a single year.

I feel more in sync with the Spiel des Jahres results than in prior years... I didn't buy a ton of games in over the past year, but Jinxo & Rebirth were two of them, and I like them both a lot.

I just played one of my favorite games of Dominion ever. The dreaded Possession was in the kingdom and my opponent went right for it. But Margrave was also present, so I was able to make my hand intentionally worse before handing it over. The best was giving them a hand of 2 curses + Ghost Town...

For a while I've been noodling on a taxonomy of decision types. I'm not convinced it's fully baked, but I already have been using it successfully in my design process, so I thought I might share it here in its current form. At the moment there's 5 types.

It happens to me often, where I write a song & realize it doesn't sit quite right in my vocal range. So then I transpose it so it feels better to perform, but I can never get used to hearing the new key on playback. It just forever sounds wrong to me. And so I never finish the song. 😑

I've posted about it before, but Jinxo (Dito in German) is one of my favorite new party games, so I'm very happy to see it get nominated for a Spiel des Jahres. True, it's yet another party game about matching the majority, but both its writing & bingo-like structure really elevates that formula.

🍒 Let's go! 🍒 The hard work, skill, and creativity on display for last year's Cherry Rush was off the charts - we were absolutely blown away. So excited for number 2!

youtu.be/LU0kG4Kfdg4 Cherry Rush returns 28, 29, and 30 August 2026! The event will include more categories, races, showcases, mods, and more. I can't wait to celebrate this amazing community again, and show off all that they have accomplished in the last year. Stay tuned! - Matt

Agree with this, and there are some interesting choices to be made about what to purposefully leave out of your balance formulas, so that players still have room to get an edge. I often evaluate cards in a vacuum & do not model synergies for exactly this reason.

I notice that "close enough" often is "just right" because it leaves edges for people to discover, and those discoveries are part of the joy of a strategy game.

A lot of effort in multiplayer board game design goes into making sure everyone feels they have a chance to win for as long as possible. But this isn't necessary if we persuade players to care about their ranking. So many players have internalized "1st place or nothing" but it need not be that way.
