Take a look at bizarre past of disc designs with me. it’s fun to imagine what the game is about with limited colors. Gamedisc Beauty: www.instagram.com/gamediscbeauty
my favorite games and pieces of music are often, but are not always, ones i bounced off of at first and then later, slowly, warmed up to. for instance, i was completely disinterested in elden ring and now, hilariously,

Dungeon Magic (1993) | beat 'em up | arcade | Taito At 88, Vold proves age is just a number as one of the playable characters in Taito's RPG-like, isometric adventure. Known as Light Bringer in Europe and Japan, it had traps, co-op, and screaming bosses bent on keeping you from saving the world!
The tip menu is behind the lil' blue friend in the lower right corner of the title screen btw 😉
POINPY IS BACK! 🎉 And now it's FREE! No ads, no paid unlocks, just the full game. There's a tip option if you feel like it 😉 Available NOW on iOS and Android!
*36th birthday (released in 1990) But yeah, Solstice rules! One of those childhood "enigma games" that I took the time to finally learn and play through more recently (with hand-drawn maps). Cool to see in-development footage! Also, amazing Japanese box art by Naoyuki Katoh:
Happy 26th birthday to Solstice, the isometric puzzle platformer developed for the NES by Software Creations! How often do you get to see behind the scenes footage from the making of an NES game? More often today, thanks to the Video8 tape included in the Solstice Player's Pak!

Cool interview... there's lots to chew on, but one thing I'm struck by is *how* devoted Miyamoto is to the idea of capturing a big audience. Surprising in how often he brings it up unprompted as well as how conflicted he seems to feel about it. What would unrestrained Miyamoto be like, I wonder...?
Today we have something special: a newly translated interview from July 1996 between Shigeru Miyamoto and Kenji Eno! Conducted just weeks after the launch of Mario 64, Eno takes Miyamoto to task (in a friendly way) with several fascinating critiques of its design. shmuplations.com/miyamotoxeno/

Shadow of the Ninja - Reborn (PC / Switch / PS4|5 / Xbox S X|S, Tengo Project, 2024)
The retrospective this groundbreaking game deserves, by someone who challenged and defeated every single version of it... including some wild ports you probably never knew existed (I sure didn't!). Absolutely monumental achievement!

29 years ago, a small team at Capcom known as Dirty Beret were given the reigns for the 3rd entry in the Darkstalkers series to "reinvent what it means to be a monster." Vampire Savior is my favorite fighter, so let's explore this experimental masterpiece: youtu.be/bbl1856uGI0
Closed credits on Mina the Hollower - really fantastic (and great-looking) game. Impressed with hollowing as a novel movement mechanic that's strong, open-ended, but also commital/risky. That's rare and the level/boss design does a great job of showing it off. The effort involved shines everywhere.

This is up there as one of the best final bosses, simply because of how the UI changes for this one fight. It's the only time health bars are used. When I think of the ways video games could be "cinematic" successfully, this is more like what I imagine. Longplay: www.youtube.com/watch?v=JD0k...
The boss of Taekwon-Do for the SNES will break the rules of the game and destroy the ref from the jump. I wrote an FAQ for this game back in the day.
