No-one in British theatre had a finer ear for dialogue than Peter Gill (1939-2026). The most meticulous of directors, unfashionably loyal to talent not stardom, he was also a superbly compassionate writer whose charged, emotional plays charted gay sexuality and working-class lives like no other. I was not informed by the BBC that they would have a right wing political figure or lobbyist on after me to rebut what I said. The individual in question went on to spout lies about China, etc. to distract attention from the Trump administration's assault on climate action. This is unacceptable.

I was struck by a piece on Radio 4 the other day, asking whether Burnham would be more "pragmatic" - meaning "positive" - about drilling in the North Sea. It was simply taken for granted that drilling was the "pragmatic" option, while opposing it was dogmatic or ideological.

The dominant climate discourse from the past week has been from those who want to ditch net zero targets and trash decarbonisation policies.
The moral is: don't go chasing bigots.
