France has a surplus of low-carbon electricity that could indeed be partly absorbed by data centers. But predicting exactly how much electricity future data centers will require is extremely hard,” said Phuc-Vinh Nguyen, head of the Jacques Delors Institute’s energy center.

Latest paper adresses how MS spend their ETS revenues. Spoiler, not on industrial decarbonisation. Between 2021 and 2024, Member States have spent €53 bn of their €112 bn ETS revenues. According to a recent analysis by the Jacques Delors Institute, 22 of the 27 EU MS have adopted over 120 support measures at a collective cost of over €9 billion. Sometimes I actually wonder if something has been learned from the past crisis. My itw 👇: www.theparliamentmagazine.eu/news/article...
Europe’s new energy crisis fuels a green 'told you so'
The war in Iran has already added €22 billion to the EU’s fossil fuel bill. Climate campaigners say much of it could have been avoided.
theparliamentmagazine.eu
Since the Iran war, 22 EU states have introduced more than 120 uncoordinated measures costing over €9 billion to ease the impact of higher energy prices, according to a report by the Jacques Delors Institute. That comes on top of €13 bn in additional costs due to more expensive fossil-fuel imports.
The European Commission is set to recommend lowering energy taxes and power grid charges to boost the uptake of clean technologies.
We launched our tracker mapping the measures taken by 22 MS as an answer to the Iran war. Most of them are untargetted and mute the price signal (capping price, excise reduction) for a total amount of 9 bn. Only 3 MS have commited to a decent electrification push : institutdelors.eu/en/projets/i...

The EU needs a gas coordinated approach for storage AND demand reduction as we argue. To do so, a dedicated legal framework is required as done during the previous crisis. If not, the risk is that MS act recklessly like they are doing by capping oil at the pump. institutdelors.eu/en/publicati...

The peak of TTF following the blocage was 63€, a price that was met in mid September 2021. When previous gas cap was proposed price was at 120€ (nov 22). It feels like the EC is panicking leading them to offer wrong solutions. Focus should be on reducing demand not nullifying price signal.
The EU introduced a gas price cap that was never triggered during the energy crisis. Now Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is looking to bring it back amid the Iran war and the growing calls to lower power bills. Read more 👇 www.bloomberg.com/news/article...
Quite a poor timing for Italy indeed, who also happens to be the EU MS the most reliant on Qatar's LNG. But the Iran situation might act as a suppletive argument for IT to ask for prices measures during the EUCO, the EC will have to stand its ground.
I'm so glad Italy is not working on any policies to structurally increase gas demand
A much welcomed stance that must also be backed by France as the country benefit a lot from the carbon price signal to export its low-carbon electricity. Postponing the ETS won't solve the heavy-industry loss of competitiveness that is the results of decade of statu quo
Spain has come to the defense of the European Union's bedrock climate law, with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez warning fellow European leaders against dismantling the embattled Emissions Trading System.

MS are playing a dangerous game. They should be reminded that they are the main recipients of ETS revenues, yet they allocate only around 5% to decarbonizing heavy industry — their own choice. Undermining the system’s credibility and predictability is in no one’s interest and will derail us from -55

Having the EPP ally with the far-right is, as Thu rightfully says, a culmination of already existing dynamics and should not come as a surprise. It was a matter of time. Now the Q° is, will this behaviour be limited to this Omnibus or is this the begining of full unraveling of the Green Deal?
Today, the conservatives (EPP) passed a major piece of EU legislation with the far-right groups in the EU Parliament, marking the breakdown of the cordon sanitaire. The EPP, under Weber, has decided to sacrifice long-term principles and stability for short-term political gains. Thread:
Among the many consequences that will need to be monitored regarding the ETS2 postponement: - which legal vehicle/trick will the EC use (reopening the directive would be very dangerous) - will the SCF keep its €65bn enveloppe (I would argue yes) - many price scenarisation are now partly obsolete
Delaying ETS2 might be a pragmatic choice (elections in PL, FR and IT in 2027) but should be done under very strict conditions incl frontloading of revenues starting ASAP. In two weeks from now we will release our recommendations for a reform and timeframe on that matter so stay tuned!

This week, I'm back to work with a few comments regarding France's stance on the 2035/2040 target.
