As a pragmatic centrist, I read the Niemöller poem differently. After each group mentioned I pencil in what percentage of the population they are, and if it’s a small number I cross off their names as disposable. Poetry is fine but math wins elections!!

he/him/his Tech by trade, politics and law by hobby. But, like, trying not to be the type of person you'd assume that describes? 😬 I think humanity went off the rails the first time someone wished they knew what time it was.
[being hoisted] HEY!!! whose petard is this???
"By continuing, you're agreeing to let Google Photos: * Gain a deep understanding of your life * Determine your location * Use your queries to improve" Maybe this is damning with faint praise, but I actually really appreciate the dramatic phrasing. It's a big request and they did frame it as such.
I understand both the personal and business incentives regarding showing a pop-up or a tutorial for a new feature you just delivered. I use few apps. I should not have to close or complete an intrusive "here's what's new!!!" prompt more than once every eleven days IMO.
In the early 2000s it was a running joke that you couldn't just put ".com" after a concept (e.g. "whitehouse") because it'd probably be porn. Things felt risky, but in a stupid but contained way. Today (absent other information) I'd trust whitehouse dot com over dot gov, and I trust neither.
Cake: the thing people don't bother making for your birthday anymore. The White Stripes: the least interesting part of the "thin blue line" American flag on your front lawn. Metallica: how you described the taste in your mouth to the doctor when you got to the ER.
Deep Purple – The color of your spider veins. Blur – Your twenties and thirties. The Smiths – What you call the three couples you socialize with whose names you can’t remember. buff.ly/YcztvTe
*tied to a chair, spitting blood to the side and sassing the antifa enforcer who just prompted my face with a fistful of tokens* ...you'll regret this, pal. I know spreeple!
Still working on my technical expertise, but is there an equivalent to "abliteration" to identify and/or negate the "You're absolutely right... <fake apology>" behavior of LLMs?
So much of the world is Newton-ing itself: making genuinely prodigious advances with dubious credit, then getting high on its own supply. We're managing to both figuratively and literally parabolically crash back to the ground, with political and religious weirdos funding both sides of that dynamic.
Hold on now. Let's not blame the factory when deregulation is clearly the problem.
Gotta shut down the factory that makes this kinda guy
i would again like to remind everyone that NEGATING A FRAME REINFORCES IT "he's not really targeting criminals" makes it an argument about criminality "this is a fascist attack" states what is actually happening START WITH WHAT IT IS not what it isn't
I hope some dashboard somewhere has highlighted how crazy it is that I've just uninstalled Google News on my new Pixel. For context, I kept the Google Reader app on my previous phone for *years* after they discontinued the service. On principle.
"Haitians are Black. (Norwegians and Swedes not so much.)" I love when formal systems like Supreme Court opinions and dissents leak some reality, and I love when reasonable people flash their teeth against the absurd lies. Yeah, I'd prefer Kagan be more vicious, but credit where credit is due.
Kagan makes sure that Trump’s gutter racism — and the majority hand-waiving it away — gets into the record.
This literally feels like one for the history books.

"man, I miss being in D.C. in the 90s" *monkey's paw curls*
DC hit 90 today so that's four 90-plus in a row -- 92, 99, 100, 90 -- and 12 on the year. YTD is tied for third most on record behind 13 in 1925 and 16 in 1991. Seems we're go for a big year of 90s... but... that developing El Nino NE CONUS blue blob?
Hey y'all, has it ever occurred to you that our eyes are basically just Tide Pods, that we occasionally put into a thin leather carrying case for a quarter of a second when we see something sharp coming towards them, and yet somehow usually last for decades?
"a ballot does not ask you whether to pull the lever that sends the trolley onto the new track; it asks you which of two people you want in the conductor’s seat when the dilemma arises" That part really hit for me.
Simple but perennially underrated point: Voting in a general election is not flashing a gang sign. www.offmessage.net/p/graham-pla...
In the year of our *waves hands wildly* 2026, how is this still underlined as a spelling error?
Really wish they'd ordered them from Don's Johns, it'd save people time adding text to the memes.
Marjane Satrapi’s books and movies had a HUGE impact on me. I still reread and rewatch all the time. And I genuinely believe that she showed the Western world insight into Iran that they’d never had before. This is a tremendous loss.

Before the saturation of secondary-character Manic Pixie Dream Girls, it was nice to have une protagoniste Fille-Lutin Exaltée de mes Rêves. (cc: @nathanrabin.bsky.social. also, I did my best with Google translate... désolé si c'est du charabia).
watching this again, the screenplay so good i got choked up and had to pause it - this movie should have won all the awards - best movie, screenplay, directing, editing, actess...

Code reviewed by WIRED uncovered an unreleased face-recognition system embedded in Meta’s smart glasses platform. Internally called “NameTag,” it’s designed to identify people via biometric data stored on users’ phones.
Hey folks they're changing it and we apparently have less than two weeks for individuals to enjoy Copilot for entertainment purposes only, so if you were planning to get weird now's the time.
