As people at Delaney Hall enter their third week of hunger and labor strikes to call out the reprehensible, inhumane conditions there, federal agents continue to brutalize people in this facility and their supporters outside. Our elected leaders must heed the strikers' demands.

As a fan of Star Trek & other science fiction, I don’t mind if science is fudged for dramatic effect. But when the scientific process & scientists themselves are misrepresented, inserting secrecy & efforts at social control, it contributes to distrust in science & misconceptions that can cause harm.
The new movie Disclosure Day is all about a big, alien secret. But SETI researchers behind the updated postdetection protocol say they aren’t in the business of secrets
That really should say, “thanks to the markets changing their rules so index funds would have to automatically buy SpaceX shares to add to their portfolio instead of the previous 1-year block on companies joining the market before consideration, SpaceX’s share price rose 20%” or something like that
Shares in Elon Musk's SpaceX jumped more than 20 percent on their first day of trading Friday after the biggest initial public offering in history, making the polarizing entrepreneur the world's first trillionaire as he vowed to take humanity to Mars. u.afp.com/Sz5q

US immigration memo seeks to end temporary visas as easy path to green cards | What it means to Indians
The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) on Friday issued a new policy memo reaffirming that foreign nationals seeking adjustment of status must complete the process through consular processing outside the United States via the Department of State, in line with existing immigration laws and court rulings. Indian applicants will be forced to leave the US and apply for “adjustment of status” for a green card in India except in extraordinary circumstances. (X/@unumihaimedia) Officers have been directed to consider all relevant factors and information on a case-by-case basis when determining whether a foreigner warrants this extraordinary form of relief.

Ummmmm guys... I just went to canvas to do something for class and this is all I can see. IT has said nothing and my students need to use this to submit assignments and I need it to grade and also what information are we being blackmailed with and...Well, things are going great!
Kind of surprised that this hasn't been bigger news. It's finals week for a whole lot of universities, and yet, Canvas (a learning/grading platform used by ~9,000 schools globally) is currently inaccessible because of a pay-or-have-your-data-leaked hack. www.insidehighered.com/news/tech-in...
“PAY OR LEAK”: Hackers Target Big Higher Ed Vendor
The criminal extortion group ShinyHunters breached Instructure last week. The hackers, who have also attacked individual universities, demanded the ed-tech giant pay up or face a data leak.

We really cannot overstate how bad and stupid this idea is
Back in the '90s, when I first heard discussion about plans for solar reflectors in space, it was obvious then that there are so many things wrong with these idea. I don't know where to start, so for now I will say: This is such a bad idea. www.theguardian.com/science/2026...

I was unaware how much tobacco marketers went on to influence our perceptions of climate change. It's always eye-opening -- and inspiring -- to speak with atmospheric scientist and educator @katharinehayhoe.com:
If most Americans care about the climate, why is the US clawing back protections? | Colorado Public Radio
Two thirds of Americans say they are concerned about climate change. Asked whether they are directly affected, and the percentage plummets. Asked what they should do about it, and it shrinks further. ...

Sorry I'm not more open-minded about LLMs, it's just some fucking maniacs shoveled out a bunch of useless bloatware featuring that technology, did not give me any chance to opt out, reorganized the entire economy around it, zeroed out gains made by green energy, and made it impossible to buy RAM
For all the but how can we afford space exploration folks…this means we’ve already spent more on this war that started last week than Cassini cost in the 26 years it took to build, launch, and operate it.
Preliminary Pentagon cost estimate of the war in Iran is $1 BILLION a day. So far.

Precios 🔺, prestaciones 🔻🔻🔻
Why learn to code when you can use an LLM and pay a subscription fee for the rest of your life.
