This seems to me like a massive lurking impact that will see big effects in 5-10 years+ It's also been coupled with a bunch of 'public information' / 'investor education' efforts that are have been much more consumed/acted upon by higher earners... bsky.app/profile/iron...

The biggest impact is a huge number of people salary sacrificing large amounts and then retiring early and it’s very hard to score this but people on 140k salary sacrificing 41k/year for 7 years suddenly see their pots are quite big in a few years!

Imagine the temptation of the Wargame production team to have this cartoon as a bit of """misinformation""" propagated by the Russians in their scenario. High def footage of Gove's reaction would have clipped up real nice on the socials 😂 bsky.app/profile/step...

#TBT to this from 2012 in honour of Michael Gove starring as an invasion-battling leader in Sky's new show The Wargame. If you don't know what or who this comic is about... just count yourself lucky and scroll on, no worries.

[Opening scene is WESTMINSTER, LONDON. Over Downing Street a huge ALIEN SPACECRAFT hovers, silent, still, filling the whole sky a la Independence Day].

[Cut to INSIDE 10 DOWNING STREET. The (then) prime Minister DAVID CAMERON is looking out of his office window at the ship.]

VOICE FROM OFF-SCENE, BEHIND CAMERON:
Prime Minister…

CAMERON [addressing the person behind him, still keeping his eyes fixed ahead in dread at the spaceship]:
Yes?

[We see the speaker is MICHAEL GOVE, then Education Secretary]:

GOVE:
Let me do it.

CAMERON:
For God's sake, Michael, you're the Education Secretary! You've never flown a fighter plane in your life!

GOVE:
But I know I could do it, David. I could fly a fighter plane into the big space- ship...

...and shoot all the aliens.

CAMERON:
But you have no military training!

GOVE:
David

I haven't told you this, but...

I used to be a journalist. For The Times.

[Cameron reacts, turning to look at Gove with awe and respect, as if only now truly seeing him for the first time].

GOVE:
I wrote two articles about planes, David.

I've got strong opinions about aliens.

I know I can do this job.

[Cut to a title card panel]:

AND SO:

[Then cut again to Cameron on the roof of Number 10, watching a Michael Gove pilot a fighter jet up towards the spacecraft, and then completely miss it, careering towards Earth, as Cameron buries his face in his hands].

[Ends]

Gemini seems specifically bad for this - which is wild given Google's heritage and supposed founding ethos. You'd think they would have doubled down on LLM training approaches or additional features around the model that specifically mitigated it... but nah bsky.app/profile/timh...

I've been checking the source of quotes for my forthcoming book, and the performance of Gemini is extraordinary. I paste the quote into Google, and Gemini will barge in with the wrong answer over and over again. It's not an occasional thing - it's reliably wrong. Very odd.

Classic need to zoom in and do more research here than just look at the A/B test graphs. YES majority of users the majority of the time are on job: ‘help me pass the time’. Algo feed is great. BUT. There’s a rarer, high impact job: ‘Give me the latest on the thing I care about right now’

When people complain about chronological (Following) versus algorithmic (For You) feeds, it pays to remember that revealed preferences are different from people’s stated preferences. We have overwhelming evidence that actual users prefer For You feeds not feeds limited to people they follow.

Ofcom should step in and do something about all the Guardian articles which leave you guessing for several borderline-illiterate paragraphs before confirming in passing that it is aimed at their Australian readers
