I’m not a particularly huge Rush fan, but I gotta admire this moment. The two guys handled the death of a beloved, irreplaceable member in about the best way possible, and they kicked ass while doing it. Hats off. Coo roo coo coo coo coo coo coo! (If you got that, you’re old.)

This is true. As a creator, I lean on my redneck Alabama upbringing like it’s solid gold. Because it is. It’s my lived experience and my authenticity, and nobody can take it away from me. Authenticity is a terrific place to start from.

I want to remind writers from working-class backgrounds that right now audiences are craving authenticity. Folks are really tired of born-rich influencers with hollow stories and brands. This is quite literally your time to step into publishing and you should take advantage of it because authenticity is your strong suit. #booksky #amwriting

I wasn’t alone in prioritizing housing at the mall. Tunnel road needs fresh energy, not more gas stations and car washes, but that’s what comes next instead of fixing Urban Place zoning. Stay tuned through August as I roll out what City Hall can do about affordability in #Asheville.

Ah, Venice. This is a photo my son took. He worked all through his senior year of high school, then took a gap year before college so he and a friend could travel Europe and North Africa. They camped in the forests of Finland and climbed with the goats in the mountains of Morocco at 18. Crazy stuff.

The grand canal in Venice at sunset.

Last weekend I was driving across the state when a biker gang, all sunglasses, grizzled beards, and patched leather, passed by me. The lead guy gave me a one-handed salute and kept going. It was my BÖC sticker. That lead biker and I connected, fan to fan, at 75 miles an hour, over an old rock band.

Every novel I write is pretty much an 18 month (at least) journey into something I love. I research, learn, dream, fabricate. Right now I’m spending time in the Islamic Golden Age, and it’s been one of the most rewarding creative experiences I’ve had. Its endlessly fascinating. #booksky #amwriting

An old engraving of the Alhambra.

Kids from the 80’s like me saw Reagan’s trickle-down lie in real time. The republicans have been playing this game a very long time, and people still fall for it. But I like Talarico a lot. Our next generation seems pretty strong if the old farts would just get out of the way.

James Talarico: "Trickle-down economics is not a theory, it is theft. They have been stealing the wealth that we all created. It's why everything sucks right now. We have an affordability crisis because we have a corruption crisis. We don't have a government of, by, and for the people. We have a government of, by, and for the billionaires"

Next Tuesday, Aug 4, my 2025 short film “After the Fall” will publicly premiere on Youtube’s popular Crafty Short Films channel. They specialize in stories which foreground the humanity of their subjects, something I can get behind 100 percent. More deets on Tuesday. youtube.com/@craftyshort...

Because I write in various genres, some folks have suggested I write under a pen name--one for horror, one for fantasy, one for noir, etc. That way the brands don't get all mixed up and I get more readers. But all of that IS my brand. My brand is untidy. My brand has BO & her glasses are smudged.

The news is Fauci this, Fauci that, Fauci the other. It’s uncanny how the right-wing creates these narratives & the media just swallows it up. And then the public goes along, & suddenly the Iran War is gone, Epstein is gone, ICE is gone, data centers are gone. It’s just a distraction. It always was.

I’m a big fan of supporting local and indie artists if I can. Some cool filmmaker friends told me about this project and said it was helmed by a super-talented up and comer, and that a little would go a long way. So I pitched in. Maybe you can help, too! seedandspark.com/fund/arcadia...
