The latest Polo naturally had a lot more safety equipment than its predecessor, while the SE's roomy interior provided another example of the apparently randomly-coloured fabric that was popular with manufacturers in the 1990s. The brochure called this Reflection trim 'chic'.

While it was less characterful than the old model - particularly the latter's much-loved 'breadvan' version - the new generation finally brought VW into line with rivals thanks to the availability of a 5-door Polo for the first time. Even in SE trim the Polo's specification was hardly over-generous.

Having left the Polo mk2 in production for what seemed like an eternity, VW finally made a bid to get back to the front of the supermini class with the third generation, launched in 1994. This 1996 UK brochure features a locally-developed SE 1.4 model, adding extra equipment. #carbluesky

Probably the standout feature of the early Polo coupé was its interior, described as offering 'a touch of class', which was exactly what status-conscious British Volkswagen buyers craved. Boldly-striped seat trim, black roof lining, colour-matched door trims and rear seat belts completed the look.

At its UK launch, the Polo Coupé was initially marketed in a single model in its own right. With 1093cc engine and a 4-speed gearbox, acceleration was described in the brochure as acheiving 0-50mph in a 'creditable' 9.6 seconds, with a 91mph top speed.

The second-generation Volkswagen Polo added an 'aerodynamic' new coupé bodystyle in 1983, although it wasn't quite the sporting model its name implied. Some commentators felt it was more of a traditional hatchback for those who didn't want the existing Polo hatch's breadvan style. #carbluesky

I’ve finally added the Magic Car Group MkII #Polo Coupé to my model car garage. In 1:18 scale, it’s a lovely and well-made thing. Had to be a Comet Blue GT, as it’s such a lovely colour. MCG also sells a black G40 (too nondescript), and a red Fox, which incorrectly still has the GT badge… #VW

Another milestone yesterday. Since I bought my 2014 #Volkswagen #Polo BlueGT almost five years ago, we’ve done 40,000 miles together. And I still love it. Handsome, fast, and economical (47-52mpg from a 1.4-litre, 138bhp turbo engine) it really is an understated - and underrated - gem.

We all know the #Volkswagen #Golf #GTI celebrates its 50th birthday in 2026. The September 1975 issue of German magazine Gute Fahrt (go on, snigger) featured an early pre-production car, with different 'GTI' font and steering wheel. VW made the right call with the final production versions of both.

Factoid: Motor’s Polo long-termer was proving a ‘super little car’ though the same Dec 1976 issue had the 1st UK full road test of a Golf GTi & a reminder it was sold in LHD form (in small numbers) there until 1979.
