I swear to God, like 80%+ of profs will (rightly) spit venom at the industry capture of higher ed, but the second you suggest these problems persist because academia itself may be broken they start sounding A LOT like the university administrations that want to obliterate them.

It's crazy funny that blue states were early to the Flock concerns and then the idea of trashing Flock got so popular that red states immediately started banning them while blue states are STILL debating the merits. Overthinking-ass states, just do the thing! Ban em!

Hot take, but this is probably a good thing. There should never have been a single federal force tasked with protecting such a large swathe of federal property and employees. That was one of the things that contributed to DOGE being able to sweep into buildings unobstructed.

I've been tasked to cover data center issues at work recently and I've learned some interesting things about data centers' environmental impacts that I thought I'd share Some really unexpected stuff beyond the energy/water stuff most people know about at this point

the US doesn't have rural poverty quite at this level anymore, but it will still SHOCK you sometimes. The saddest memory I have recently is from a few years ago when I stopped in a bombed-out shack town for fast food on a road trip, with a clearly dying 60/yo woman gasping for breath at the window

Parton was really one of the last people who lived through a type of rural poverty we just don’t have anymore. she was born in a one-room shack in a town of less than 500 people. the doctor who delivered her was paid in cornmeal. her father couldn’t read.

We've decided 9-25 is Dolly's day. We have a month to prepare, and to make this a National if not Global celebration of the best of humanity. Repeat, share, and prepare! Organize a block-party, write a poem, buy some books, sing some music...come together and be good to each other for a day!
