YES. And also there's a difference between 'critical fabulation' and just having a historical imagination that lets you think with context, it's doing specific types of recovery work to deal with problematic archives. So a) don't make shit up and b) do critique the systems behind the sources, too

Saidiya Hartman said “critical fabulation” requires “Narrative restraint.” It’s not just “make stuff up.” Right there in “Venus in two acts” — restraint is “a requirement of this method” (p.12). Before you go all fabulating pls re-read the part about it being “critical.” Thx!!!

hivemind, where would you direct a student researching ancient criticisms of early Christian asceticism? i'm thinking of the council of gangra and libanius's complaints of "the black-mobbed crowd" in antioch, but has anyone written good articles or books on this?
