For almost a year now, The Collective Good: Immigrant Pantry has quietly become one of the most powerful examples of what community care looks like in Memphis. What started as neighbors helping neighbors has turned into a fully community-funded, volunteer-run mutual aid effort delivering food, diapers, formula, hygiene supplies, cleaning supplies, and fresh groceries directly to families every single week. No grants. No corporate sponsors. No giant nonprofit infrastructure. Just people choosing solidarity over indifference. Since we began, we’ve completed more than 1,900 deliveries and stood in solidarity with over 9,600 people across our community. But these numbers only tell part of the story. They don’t show the mother opening the door cautiously because fear has taught her to be careful. They don’t show the apartment with no furniture but toys carefully piled in the corner because children still deserve joy. They don’t show families too scared to leave home asking neighbors to quietly pass along our number. They don’t show volunteers loading cars late at night, organizing supplies in garages and storage units, or stretching every dollar to make sure families have fresh food on the table. This pantry exists because Memphis showed up. Every bag of rice. Every can of soup. Every diaper. Every Venmo donation. Every volunteer delivery. Every share on social media. Every single act of support has kept this work alive. And the need has not disappeared. Every week we continue delivering to anyone who reaches out needing support. We are still seeing families struggling with rising costs, fear, instability, food insecurity, and impossible choices between groceries, rent, medicine, and baby supplies. Mutual aid is not charity. It is community survival. It is people refusing to let each other fall through the cracks. Now is the time for all good people to answer the call to defend our democracy in whatever capacity you can bring. It is time to get outside of your comfort zone and do things you never dreamed you could do. For me it was public speaking and media interviews, both of which I have done recently.
