I joined NY’s Cutest on the Bergen Bike Bus that they ride to school every Wednesday, rain or shine. We’re adding bike boulevards and more pedestrian space on Bergen and Dean Street, from Court Street to East New York Ave. It was a wonderful kind of day.

honestly if some venture capitalist /tech mogul can remake an entire university in a matter of a year or two in exchange for around 2 days of Bezos’s salary(USC founded 1880), it means that any rich person can do anything to any of our institutions at any time unless we take them back systematically

USC said "it would use a *venture capitalist’s* $200 million donation to apply AI across academic disciplines." "The donation... came from Mark and Mary Stevens. Stevens... is among the largest individual shareholders of the chip giant Nvidia, where he has spent decades on the board." Screaming.

I can't imagine what would more effectively recruit US scientific talent to other countries around the world than destroying universities, eliminating research funding, and demonizing the very concept of expertise.

The misunderstanding of embodiment such that social and cultural groundings are excluded (in addition to the often narrowly invoked views of the physical/affective) remains so problematic and seems to only be getting worse at the uncritical expansion of systems such as LLMs

what next? what, are we gonna provide *roads* for the wealthy too? gonna have health inspectors keep contaminants out of their groceries? are we just gonna have gutters and sewer systems around rich people's homes?

Waldo Jaquith@waldo.net · 4mo ago

Boy, what a terrible headline. We *need* the wealthy to participate in public services. If only poor people ride the bus, then rich people won't wield their power in support of public transit or, worse, will wield their power *against* it.

1st two categories are associated in terms of info/knowledge production. Also considerations of control (e.g., “chatbots” is a dominated, centralized category) and related considerations of problems of a centralized (probabilistic, opaque) system (also TESCREAL associated control)

Here’s a bit of analysis from @jburnmurdoch.ft.com showing chatbots are less likely to serve up misinformation than social media. So if this is how people are going to start consuming information it may be a moderating force towards factualness. Who thought that LLMs might be a force for truth?!

it's incredible that as long as you do the right amount of bigotry you can just rob the country blind and enough people will not care, even though those same people will be filled with incandescent rage if someone uses food stamps to buy a 12 pack of diet coke
