this is not true. there was no conspiracy. it didn't matter whether the streetcars were publicly owned (seattle, detroit) or private (los angeles, atlanta). a thread (because i wrote a whole-ass book on this): 1/?

Is everyone aware of the General Motors streetcar conspiracy? In the mid-20th century, auto and oil interests bought up electric streetcar systems across the US and systematically replaced them with bus routes and paved roads, funneling commuters toward private cars.

The politics of canonization under JPII an extremely rich topic. Willing to steamroll opposition to Stein martyrdom designation (similarly to quick Escriva canonization) but not to beatifying Romero whose grave he visited twice.

The question with that isn’t whether you could formally claim she was a martyr (sure) but whether it was appropriate in light of overwhelming opposition from the Jewish community to this designation. This is part of a streak in JPII’s approach to Judaism that includes issues around Auschwitz, Kolbe.

All the Fauci stuff is a modern day version of the POW/MIA stuff after Vietnam - a way to try to rewrite the history of a huge failure of conservative ideology to be instead a story about how liberals and foreigners stabbed us in the back.

I think it would be possible to criticize the Mamdani municipally-owned grocery store thing as a largely symbolic fulfillment of a nice-sounding campaign promise that does little to fix systemic issues, were he not also quietly implementing a lot of policies that fix systemic issues too

The toxicity in conservative Catholic institutions - publications, colleges, ministries like WoF that combine elements of both - is enabled in part by decent people who have made a career in them and understandably don’t want to just give that up in collapsing professions. But there’s a limit.

Connect this to the activities of Grunow and other articles about institutional culture at WoF and it makes sense. The issue is they still have enough normal people writing/working for them that people can just eyeroll these. A few public departures from those who can afford it would go a long way.
