My column this week. In the face of unprecedented attacks on academic independence from Alabama politicians, the leaders of the University of Alabama and Auburn University have been weak. And they're allowing their schools to become another tiresome extension of state politics.

We have created a booklet with advertisements of self-emancipating enslaved people in Barbados in the 18th and 19th centuries. It aims to make these ads more accessible and contains images of c. 20 ads, their transcriptions, and a short introduction contextualizing them. tinyurl.com/26zkuxf7 1/

HB 580 made it out of committee. Call your senator NOW and tell them to vote no! Tomorrow will be too late. #protecthighered #aaup #voteno
A terrible solution to a problem that doesn't exist. Never change, Alabama GOP!
A bill changing faculty senate structure, tenure and curriculum for Alabama colleges passed out of the Senate finance committee with no major changes. Before it hits the Senate floor, read how it was debated in the House.
HB580 would effectively remove tenure, end faculty governance, and give control of curriculum over to the Board of Trustees--threatening the integrity of our curriculum and accreditation. We think curriculum should be designed by experts in the field, not politicians. What do you think?
