Historic Lib Dem voter who is apparently now hard left without changing my views (I now vote Green). Cat lover. Passionate about justice and the rule of law.

PLEASE SHARE THIS To the young person (longish dark hair, patterned waistcoat, chinos & DM boots) who left this scroll of papers on the Piccadilly Line train at South Kensington station at about 4.25pm today, I’ve handed it to the station staff at Hammersmith.

Some reflections on the new Cabinet. It started well, with some deserved sackings - Reed, Lammy, Reeves, Kyle, Kendall. Politically, Healey as Chancellor, swerving both Miliband and Mahmood, was smart. But we now have a CX who wants to cut benefits to spend more on defence.

OK, this already makes him a better PM than Starmer. Other free things he could do immediately to keep people listening: 1. Come off X 2. Sack Mahmood 3. De-proscribe Palestine Action and free all those arrested in connection with it. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Burnham to scrap digital ID to focus on 'helping with cost of living'

A spokesperson for the incoming prime minister says his government would “put its focus where people need it right now”.

If you are a Unite member and want more climate action (not less), look out for the ballot paper which should arrive in the next couple of days. Sharon Graham has argued for more drilling in the North Sea and briefed against Ed Miliband because of his work on net zero. Time to dump Sharon!

France v Morocco Thursday, 9.00 pm Spain v Belgium Friday, 8.00 pm England v Norway Saturday, 10.00 pm. Argentina v Switzerland Sunday, 2.00 am That rules out local time zone issues as the excuse for effing around with start times. So it’s just another pointless farcical decision from the US.

Dodgy rules delaying matches Random start times Ridiculous distances between venues Hydration breaks Banning a Somali ref The treatment of the Iran team Players and officials harassed by border guards and police And now the corrupt rescinding of Balogun’s ban The most farcical and corrupt WC ever?

Here's an off the wall thought. Today's politics are about the rich and powerful seeking policies that push the general public down Maslow's hierarchy of needs so that they are too worried about their basic needs to worry about things like accountability for the wrongdoing of the wealthy.

Maslow's hierarchy of needs
Self-actualization:
achieving one’s
full potential,
including creative
activities
Esteem needs:
prestige and feeling of accomplishment
Belongingness and love needs:
intimate relationships, friends
Safety needs:
securily, safety
Physiological needs:
food, water, warmth, rest

This sounds like an appalling case. I hope it's looked at again. But I really would have hoped that a former human rights barrister PM would have had the sense to say, "This is a live matter before the courts, and it would be wholly inappropriate for me to comment". www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Starmer 'appalled' by case of boys spared jail after raping teenage girls

The prime minister said it was "right" that the sentences were being urgently reviewed.

Well, this sure as hell needs to be more widely known. "The Labour Party leadership has caused uproar by banning its councillors from doing local deals with the Green Party." This is forcing Labour councillors to do deals with Tories. www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/poli...

Starmer bans Labour councillors from doing deals with Polanski’s Green Party

A row has broken out after the ban on Labour councillors working with the Greens forced them to make a deal with the Tories in Brent

So what's this bold new agenda in the King's Speech? Some high(?)lights. Anyone think this is what will revive Starmer's premiership? A Regulating for Growth Bill will allow for pilot schemes to boost innovation in areas like defence technology and AI-controlled ships
