So the message of this research out of China, where you were seeing a lot of kids using A.I. to help them, was that when they were using the A.I., they were getting things done faster. But it turned out that the skills they were learning were not holding, that their actual personal performance, at least in the way we traditionally measure it, was degrading. What do you think when you hear that? The last part — I completely agree. Try to get a kid to do long division right now. The multiplication table is starting to be forgotten. Doing square roots, my goodness. Basic math is being forgotten. Does it matter? That’s my question for you. Yeah. I don’t think it does. I don’t think it does. But there must be some set of skills that matter. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. But maybe not those. We’re going to discover new ones. Just maybe not those. There are a lot of skills that don’t matter. My first confession, I actually don’t know my address.

I was deputy M.E. at the WSJ when Murdoch took over, with a similar “editorial independence board.” Within 4 months, our top editor was gone, replaced by a loyal Murdoch deputy. That board raised a quivering objection, but the deed was done. If the Ellisons own CNN, they’ll do whatever they want.

One thing I haven’t seen brought up about Coyote vs ACME is the score. That is a gorgeous, hilarious score. As many in-jokes as the scripted movie, easily, but it doesn’t feel overly wink wink nudge nudge. Just a full, lush score. RECORDED WITH A FULL ORCHESTRA AND CHOIR

Segura describes working in an administration where climate action was sidelined — she held three jobs at once! — forcing her to deliver more with fewer resources. She also highlights broader institutional patterns that affected other climate-related departments like tree planting

What my office was asked to do The ordinance, Los Angeles Administrative Code Section 22.362 (I think this was recently amended), assigned the Climate Emergency Mobilization Office emissions tracking, mitigation, and adaptation programs (which were folded into the Heat Action Plan), and community climate assemblies, for which I developed the Climate Equity LA Series. A 2022 amendment added the Chief Heat Officer role and a Heat Action Plan. Those additions came to me on top of the job I already had, so I held three roles at once: Director of the office, Executive Director of the 19-member Climate Emergency Mobilization Commission, and Chief Heat Officer. The office started with one person: me, and that work of starting up and building the office wasn't recognized as additional; I had to fight for every dollar and staff member. I fought for years to build the staff the ordinance's duties required (which did not include the CAAP). Under the Bass administration, the budget shrank each year to a fraction of the original allocation, until the office was two people with no community engagement funds. The ordinance's duties did not shrink with it.The pattern My office was one item on a longer list of climate programs impacted by this Mayoral administration. The Environmental Justice unit in City Planning was eliminated. The Urban Forestry Officer was moved out of the Board of Public Works. The Biodiversity Program at LA Sanitation was slashed. This doesn't even begin to explain the damage done by reducing the various Bureaus we need for infrastructure, street shade and trees, and grant writing and project management. We have lost so many grant opportunities because the City has lost capacity in that arena too. The Urban Forest Management Plan, the City's roadmap for growing and protecting tree canopy, has sat unadopted for more than two years, stalled in the same budget office process that absorbed the climate plan. Los Angeles County adopted its own forest plan in October 2024. The City still lists its plan as "in development. The City trims its street trees on a cycle far slower than the five-year standard, at nearly double the per-tree cost found in the 2019 audit, and finished a year past deadline still 20,000 trees short of its own planting goal.

What the record shows Three facts, all in public documents linked at the end. 1. The ordinance that created my office never assigned the Climate Action and Adaptation Plan to CEMO. 2. When the City funded that plan in 2024, the $1.5 million went to the City Administrative Officer to hire a consultant to get it done through our CAO's budget office, and a Climate Impact Team was created there. This Mayor signed that budget. 3. The Mayor's own climate plan, published in April 2026, states that the CAO's budget office was instructed to develop the Climate Action and Adaptation Plan. (A consultant also created this, with minimal community input.) So the Mayor put the climate plan in another department, paid for it there, and wrote that decision into her own climate plan. Then, at the forum, she said my office failed to finish it, when it was never our assignment, and gave that as the reason to cut the office and remove the founding Chief Heat Officer. Both accounts cannot be true.

Chuckles used to work in the PE department at a community college, and when they were moving offices she let me sift through a lot of the "crap" they were throwing away. Treasures. Play a weird party game tonight in her honor. She would like that.
