On the eve of #LaborDay, a reminder of the long struggle for living wages. By the 1920s, many textile-producing centers where Franco-Americans were concentrated had unionized. The situation was more complicated in other areas, where employers more successfully eroded working-class solidarity.

(1/2) In yet another parallel to the Gilded Age, the tariff system elicited similar opposition on both sides of the international border in the 1880s and 1890s. One Franco-American newspaper, Benjamin Lenthier's Lowell-based National, published a powerful denunciation in 1892. It notably read:
Mark Carney's position appears to be "not necessarily tariffs, but tariffs if necessary." Between this and his newfound majority, he is one séance away from becoming this century's Mackenzie King.
