It's gotten so much easier to start learning so many more languages, you used to be limited to the 3-5 major languages that a local bookstore or educational institution had decided it was worth making available, and now you can just like, look things up in hundreds of them

One of my favorite moments from #DH2026 came while I was helping our Local Organizers with the children's atelier. Seeing the wonderful childminders with the children was such a healing moment amid a busy conference week. And they surprised me with this precious bracelet. 💚

I love this idea, and now I'm thinking about how to apply it to some of my more currently-frustrating crafts. And the examples for Terminal and Git are wonderfully thought-out. Relatedly, the #DataSittersClub has a tl;dr that we'll be posting soon by @alyssavi.bsky.social about the Terminal. 🥰

To write in the classic high fantasy mould, you need not be hung up on food specifically, but there must be SOME very mundane thing you're sincerely interested in and prepared to describe in excruciating detail every time it comes up. Clothing. Furniture. Architecture. It doesn't work without it.

Now here's a challenge for the men of @ach.bsky.social: volunteer to be next in line for secretary and mix things up so it's not always women and enbies doing that work. The last male secretary was Stéfan Sinclair from 2004-2007. It's been 20 years, my dudes!

Hoo boy when I was the Secretary on a board and couldn’t find a man to take my place when my term ended because having to do that work of metacognition was too feminized

I should add this wasn't a library committee. It's -extremely- rare that guys in libraries can't do this kind of work well. They chose to work in places that are about structuring, preserving, and providing access to information & knowledge after all!

Supportive anecdata: I co-chaired a governance committee a few years ago, and made notetaking a random draw of members, split about 50/50 men/women. A few men good notes. "Functional" was the floor for women. But a few men took near-pointless notes bc they had no idea what the work even was.

I like this notetaking example. it is a good case of how gender works. Notetaking has never been about producing a transcript. It is a bureaucratic skill in the 20th c. organixarion because it is SENSEMAKING. Those women socialized to take notes? They have been doing men’s metacognition for them

Notetaking in meetings is tiny case in point - used to be some predictable social assumptions who would do it; now anyone can offer to do ”notetaking” by turning on the AI listener. Further interesting scenario is human recollection / notes (taken by habit by a person) conflict with AI summary

Roundup of #DH2026 conference #DHmakes creations! Starting with Jan Rybicki's Stylo PCA of 20 English novels. Machine knit then hand embroidered. Spatial reasoning is still a struggle for me so I'm extra proud of having figured out how to fold the linear scarf into X,Y coordinates.

So, so many times this week have I almost posted this. Scott did it for me. Copyright is the root legal scourge that did this. In particular, the US copyright ruling that it's legal to scan a book, IF you destroy it. Yes, AI companies are evil. But copyright rulings mandated the destruction.

Copyright laws, digital distribution deals, & publishing monopolies are the reason destructive book scanning is putting books at risk. I get why folks are angry at AI companies buying books to destroy them. However, these issues predate them and hang a lot on books being subject to "market forces."
